STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Former Santa Clara coach Dick Davey was hired Monday to be one of the assistants on new Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins' staff a year after retiring from the profession.

Former Loyola Marymount coach Rodney Tention and Mike Schrage, who spent nine seasons with Dawkins at Duke, are the other two assistants on the staff officially announced Monday. Former Saint Mary's assistant Dan Shell and Yale assistant Mark Sembrowich also were hired for undetermined roles on the basketball support staff.

Davey has been a fixture in college basketball in the area, spending 30 years with the Broncos, including 15 as head coach before retiring after the 2006-07 season. Davey is a four-time West Coast Conference coach of the year, who led Santa Clara to 251 wins and three NCAA tournament appearances.

``Dick obviously brings a wealth of knowledge to our program and I feel he will be a tremendous addition to our staff,'' Dawkins said. ``In addition to leading successful teams at Santa Clara, he is a true teacher of the game and his experience will be an invaluable asset to our program.''

Tention has experience in the Pac-10, spending eight years as an assistant at Arizona, winning the national title in 2001. He most recently was the head coach for three years at Loyola Marymount, posting a 30-61 record before being fired after this past season. The Lions finished second in the WCC with an 8-6 conference record his first year, reaching the conference tournament title game for the first time since 1989.

Schrage joined Duke in 1999 as the program's academic and recruiting coordinator. He became director of basketball operations in 2002 and remained in that role until leaving with Dawkins.

``I am excited to have our coaching staff on board,'' Dawkins said. ``During the search process, our objective was to try and find the right fit and chemistry for our program and I believe we have done that successfully.''

Stanford finished in second place in the powerful Pac-10 last season, then went on to reach the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament before losing to Texas. Coach Trent Johnson left to take over at LSU after the season and the Cardinal also lost star big men Brook and Robin Lopez to the NBA draft.
