Young, Everett out for Twins against Athletics

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Twins were without left fielder Delmon Young and shortstop Adam Everett for Tuesday night's game against the Oakland Athletics, leaving manager Ron Gardenhire with a two-man bench.

Young injured his ankle while chasing down a double by Jack Cust in the fourth inning on Monday night.

``Delmon's not moving around very well today,'' Gardenhire said Tuesday before the game.

He said Young could be available in an emergency situation, but he would rather give him the day off and see how he feels on Wednesday for the series finale.

Everett was sitting in the dugout in the sixth inning when he was hit on the right hand by a foul ball off the bat of teammate Nick Punto. X-rays showed that it was just a deep bruise and there were no broken bones, but Gardenhire said Everett will be out for at least the next two games.

Jason Kubel started in Young's place in left field and Brendan Harris filled in at shortstop. That left Gardenhire with third baseman Mike Lamb and backup catcher Mike Redmond as his only hitters on the bench.

``Everett started swinging the bat, playing good defense, making a lot of good plays for us and then he gets hit,'' Gardenhire said. ``It just goes on and on. You just have live with it. Everybody gets beat up.''

The Twins have been bothered by injuries all season, especially to their infielders. They received some good news when second baseman Alexi Casilla, who has been on the disabled list since July 30 with a torn ligament in his right thumb, performed well in a rehab start with Triple-A Rochester on Monday night.

The plan was for Casilla to play again on Tuesday night, then rejoin the Twins in Minnesota on Wednesday. If all goes well, Casilla could be activated for the weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels, Gardenhire said.
