With the news of Ryan Mallett transferring from Michigan, I decided that I should give my thoughts on the situation. I got to admit that I wasn't the biggest Mallett fan. He reminded me of the typical Coach Carr quarterback recruit. Tall and immobile. I saw him as the second coming of John Navarre and for that I cringed. I always wondered why Coach Carr took high school quarterbacks like Antonio Bass and Jermaine Gonzales and move them to receiver where schools like Ohio State had Troy Smith, and Indiana had Antwaan Randle-El. It just made no sense to me at all. Anyway, while Mallett did hold down the fort for an injured Henne and put up respectable numbers, I was not that sad to hear that the kid is leaving town.

After all, Coach Rodriguez's offense does not suit him. I couldn't see Mallett executing a quarterback sweep. Also, the kid has the right to play in an offense that suits him and prepares him for the next level. So, I wish him good luck wherever he ends up (be it Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas A & M or UCLA which are the schools of his current preferrence). But then it hit me: Michigan has no QB. Whoever takes the snap on that first Saturday will be making his first collegiate start. Be it Will Sheridan (I believe that is his name...if I am wrong please correct me), David Cone (not the pitcher), or Georgia Tech transfer Steven Threet. None of these QB's fit the mobile role of a Pat White so there will be plenty of Michigan fans praying for the committment of wunderkid Terrelle Pryor. I would love to see him in the Maize and Blue but for some reason when I see him, all I see is the hated Scarlet and Grey so Lord Willing may there be another exciting mobile QB prospect who wants to make Ann Arbor his home for the next four years.

In conclusion, I am torn over the departure of Mallett. I wasn't the biggest fan but now with him leaving town Michigan has no QB with playing experience. So, what does this all mean? Maybe not a lot but as of right now...I am worried.

Adios, Ryan. I wish you luck.

I can't blame him for wanting to play in a system that fits his skills. Don't worry, Hova, we played the entire season without a QB. Wait, we ended a terrible season 6-6.......start worrying!!

EJ I agree that Ryan doesn't fit the system and that he has the right to got to an offense that fits him. But if you look at what Urban did at Florida on his first years with a traditional offense QB (Leak) and a spread offense QB (Tebow), I think was better than what happened at Nebraska by changing things over night. In other words i think Rich could have made this work and changing the system slowly may be a better idea than just tearing it all apart and starting from scratch (which is what happened at Nebraska), and by having a two QBs system would give whoever is the next spread offense QB the experience need it (even for Terrell Pryor). After all this Michigan team had nine wins, so there was no need to start from zero, and those great spread offense QBs (white, Dixon, Young and Smith) really shine on their junior and senior year.
Rich should be trying harder to keep this players.

TheJuice: I argued that at first when Rodriguez was hired. I suggested that Mallett could be like Chris Leak and he could recruit a runner type QB to play the Tebow role. I guess Rodriguez saw it differently.

He would be crazy not to go to Arkansas. Petrino turned Brohm into a top 10 draft pick, and his backup Huter Caldwell is the top QB for 2009. Mallett should go to Arkansas and play in the pass happy offense.

January 10, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Or he could have stayed in a recognize program with great receivers and a coach that also build a great QB in White.

January 10, 2008  10:53 AM ET

J. Hova, like you, I am anxiously waiting to hear where Pryor is going to land. Your point about not having a starting QB hit me last night. I sure hope that Rodriguez has a back up plan just in case he decides to play for "the hated Scarlet and Grey" instead Michigan. Keep up the good writing.

January 10, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Here is the thing that I think will land Pryor in Ann Arbor..Michigan absolutly needs him. OSU not so much, most likely he would sit a year or be red shirted and he's too into himself to do that. Tress won't stroke his ego and promise him the world, but he would turn him into a helluva QB and person, i.e. Troy Smith. So for those reasons I think he will be a Wolverine and have to get used to losing atleast one game a year and dread that first trip to the shoe....

Crazy not to go to Arkansas?? Who wants to play for a P.O.S. like Petrino?

January 10, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Every school that Mallett is considering are all good choices. My guess is that he goes to Arkansas. He is from Texarkana, Arkansas (although he played for a Texas highschool) and the Arkansas QB situation is wide open for him.

xxx84xxx: You are right about Pryor and Michigan. The Wolverines need him bad. He would probably take meaningful snaps as a true freshman, and if he wants to play basketball in college (and all indications are that he will) he would be a star for the b-ball team.

January 10, 2008  01:30 PM ET

I thought the basketball thing was one of the reasons he really liked OSU, because Matta said he could def. play for the Bucks Bball squad, oh well we'll see where his arrogant as.s ends up, I'm not holding my breathe or really concerned if he doesnt choose OSU.

January 10, 2008  01:49 PM ET

Some basketball recruiting sites have Pryor listed as a top 20 player. He's a 6'6'' 220 pound SG/SF. If football doesn't workout, basketball will.

However, we have seen some football/basketball guys fail miserably at basketball. Ronald Curry, Julius Peppers, Donovan McNabb (he was a good b-ball player for Syracuse but I think he might have scored like 30 points his whole career there) and others.

I think everything has been addressed here so I will sit back and let this evolve.

January 10, 2008  02:50 PM ET

I thought he should have stayed... No way is Pryor gonna start his first year (if he goes to Mich)... It's gonna take a year or two to transform Mich to a RR team.

Mallet could of learned a lot from this guy. Some kids just don't want to wait...

He would rather sit out a season than start for Mich next year... Well I wish him luck wherever he goes.

January 10, 2008  03:08 PM ET

Got to agree that it's going to take some time for Michigan to evolve. I hate to say it but I think next season could be a rough one. Michigan will still have it's typical 8 win season but it's going to look ugly at times.

No proven QB, a shaky running back situation, top two receivers are gone, and the players will have to learn a new offensive and defensive scheme. There will definitely be some growing pains in the days ahead.

January 10, 2008  03:38 PM ET

It appears to me as if UM will have a down year. That is bad for us, because it makes the Big Ten as a whole look bad.

January 10, 2008  03:38 PM ET

But I do think Pryor will end up a Wolveriette.

January 10, 2008  03:38 PM ET

Yes, I said Wolveriette.

January 10, 2008  03:47 PM ET

There's the Wolverine hater I have come to know.

January 10, 2008  05:23 PM ET

I have a good felling about Pryor coming. Hopefully I am right. If not, expect Threet to play. He is more mobile than Mallett according to a family member who played against him in high school.
