With pitchers and catchers reporting to camp, let's wrap up our divisional look at what possibly could go down prior to the start of the 2008 MLB regular season. Last, but certainly not least, we turn our attention to the NL West:
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
The Diamondbacks made a huge splash this offseason, acquiring hard-throwing Dan Haren from the Athletics. Haren now joins ace Brandon Webb in what should be one of the best 1-2 punches in baseball. After the top two, Randy Johnson should hold down the third spot, if healthy, leaving Doug Davis and Micah Owings to fill spots four and five. Last year, Haren went 15-9 with 192 Ks and a 3.07 ERA with Oakland.
The departure of Jose Valverde to Houston left Arizona without a closer. It was anticipated early on that reliever Chad Qualls, who the D-backs got in return for Valverde, would be the new closer. However, D-backs manager Bob Melvin has defined the bullpen roles, and right-hander Brandon Lyon will be the closer going into the season. In 2005, Lyon closed 14 games for Arizona.
Expect Justin Upton to play a full season in right.
LOS ANGELES DODGERS
For the last few years, the Dodgers have been looking for a big bat to put in the middle of their lineup. This offseason, they may have found just that with Andruw Jones. In a down year, Jones hit .222 with 26 homers and 94 runs batted in for Atlanta.
The addition of Jones also means that there is a surplus of talented outfielders in LA. With spring training so close, it is hard to tell if a move will be made, but look for a battle to ensue between Juan Pierre and Andre Ethier for left field. Regardless of who wins the starting job, expect them to share time unless someone is moved.
The addition of Hiroki Kuroda helps deepen an already solid staff. Brad Penny and Derek Lowe will hold the top two spots, while Chad Billingsley, Kuroda and Esteban Loaiza will fill spots three through five in the rotation.
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
