The five players below all have talent, but their big price tags could make them more of a burden than a benefit.
1. Asante Samuel, CB, Patriots - It's amazing any team would sign a former Patriot, especially for around $30 million guaranteed. New England's system makes every player on the team look better. Look at David Givens, Damien Woody, Willie McGinest, etc. Ty Law and Lawyer Milloy had OK seasons after leaving the Pats, but their best years by far were in New England.
There are other big warning signs for Samuel. Looking back, San Francisco's $80 million deal for Nate Clements did nothing to improve the team. An elite cornerback doesn't do much if the defense can't rush the passer or stop the run. Especially since rules changed and defensive backs can't touch receivers downfield.
2. Bernard Berrian, WR, Bears - Berrian is not cut out to be a No. 1 receiver. He's a great burner, but his dropped passes are a major problem. Berrian would actually fit best with a team like Chicago, where he can occasionally catch a bomb from a strong-armed quarterback like Rex Grossman, but won't be relied on in the intermediate game -- since the Bears don't have one.
3. Alan Faneca, G, Steelers - Faneca will be the latest guard to pull in an eye-popping figure, but the 30-year-old may have already lost a step. SI.com's Dr. Z keeps close tabs on offensive linemen and says Faneca grades have taken a downturn the last two seasons. Pittsburgh's pass blocking was so bad last year, it's hard to imagine Faneca wasn't at least partially responsible. The Jets are reportedly interested in Faneca and he may do fine, although they should have just stuck with Pete Kendall in the first place.
4. Donte' Stallworth, WR, Patriots -- When successful franchises like the Patriots and Eagles give up on a player, teams have a reason to be wary. Stallworth has outstanding physical skills and seems like a decent locker room guy. He just can't make that next step.
5. Michael Turner, RB, Chargers - Turner's gaudy 5.5 yards per carry career average is an aberration because of how the Chargers used him and their outstanding offensive line and scheme. He played in a lot of games San Diego was winning big and had already established a huge advantage on the offensive line.
Turner has been compared to LaMont Jordan, who looked great as Jets change-of-pace back but wasn't nearly as effective as the main guy in Oakland. Turner packs a wallop when he runs and is likely better than Jordan, but I'm not convinced the San Diego back is worth a huge contract. If Turner lasted a few days into free agency - which I don't expect -- and received a more reasonable deal, he could end up paying off.
Let me know what you think of these five free agents and other big names like Randy Moss, Julius Jones and Justin Smith. Who's worth the big bucks?

Stallworth is a stud receiver. The Patriots would have had to have paid him 11 million in '08 because of the way Rosenhaus structured his contract. He was drafted by the Saints who didnt use him to the best of his ability, and when he went to Philly he had a great season and broke alot of T.O's records while he was at it, despite missing 3 games. Someone will pay big for him, and he's worth every penny.

Report Offensive CommentI in some ways agree with you about Turner...can he do it every down? But I think he is much better than Lamont Jordan. Also I agree with you about Berrian he's got the skills but just hasn't put it all together yet...he needs to go to a team with an already established receiving core where he won't be deemed the guy.

Report Offensive Commentthe free agent draft pool is shallow indeed, except for randy moss -- who is not going anywhere..the love connection with brady is simply too enticing to vacate..also, julius jones, could flourish in denver if given a shot..look for shanny to put a bid in for jones -- and see jones regain his confidence, in a new scheme!

Report Offensive CommentTracy, the problem is... if Stallworth is such a stud, why was he relegated to 4th WR behind Jabar Gaffney?
I agree with you in saying that the main reasoning for the Pats cutting Stallworth was his cap hit this coming season, I think there were more serious underlying issues. Even if his cap hit were half the 11M, I still see him being released.

Report Offensive CommentYeah, I think Stallworth's problem was having Moss catch the long balls, Welker catching the short ones and Faulk with the check downs. He made some clutch catches last season (vs. Indy in the 4th Q for example) but just didn't have the highlight real to justify 11Mill. I think he'll get top $'s at a team that needs a top notch receiver, though.

Report Offensive CommentI absolutely think Michael Turner is worth a top-10 back contract. He isn't a frail little stick, he's a pounder with an excellent burst of speed. I'm a fan of Stallworth as well. He showed me a lot while playing for Philly. In New England he just never had the opportunity to shine.
I agree completely on Berrian and Faneca though. I'm kind of indifferent on Samuel.
As for the other guys, I think as long as you limit Moss to a three year deal or less, it is hard to go wrong--assuming you have a good system in place that can keep him happy. Anyone who signs Jones to be more than a guy who gets 30 percent of the load is foolish. Justin Smith seemed not worth the franchise tag in my mind last year, but he performs better than his numbers show. I'm indifferent on him too.
TheDeity | 02/28/08, 05:42 PM
Report Offensive CommentFor the most part, I agree with your tip 5. However, I move Justin Smith into Faneca's spot. Smith was definitely not worth the franchise money. He is the type of player that can only be successful by playing off of his fellow defenders. However, he will demand the type of money that should go to someone that makes plays by himself and other people play off of.
As far as Faneca goes, I disagree with him supposedly significantly declining in production. Yes, he is probably on the downside of his career. Nonetheless, I think that he, and the rest of the o-line for that matter, deserve a little more credit for last season. You have to keep in mind that the Steelers made a drastic shift in offensive philosophy. Despite the transition, Roethlisberger was able to have a pretty decent season as far as numbers are concerned, Also, Willie Parker was having a great year before he went down. The offensive line was obviously a big part of that success.

Report Offensive CommentI'm not sure about the first comment... 'he went to Philly he had a great season and broke alot of T.O's records while he was at it, despite missing 3 games'. Stallworth had 700 yards and 5 tds with Philly, about 60 yards a game. He's been in the league 6 years and hasn't had a thousand yard season and has been hurt alot. If the Pats didn't deal for Moss he would've had a great season. It will be interesting to see what he gets.

Report Offensive Commenteh? steelers boffensive line last year was pants there's no two ways about it. Big Ben spent most of his time running for his life and Willie was getting stuffed in the backfield far too often for it to be solely his fault. Faneca was/is good on the pull but I remember a number of wiffs in pass protection. The steelers are better off investing the money elsewhere. As for the rest, I thought Clements a bad idea last year and Samuels a bad one this year, I hope the rumours of Philly being interested aren't true... Turner may or may not be good, only a full season as the number one will tell, but I remember Amos Zeroue as well, really great as a backup/change of pace guy, horrible as a starter. And Stallworth I thought was pretty good for the Eagles, never really watched him in New Orleans, thought the big knock against him was he couldn't stay healthy, don't think he's worth 11 mil, but at a lesser price he may be a good deep threat.

Report Offensive CommentI agree with samuel.... tebucky jones anybody?.... barrian could be great in a system thats wants to throw it deep.... Raiders.... The Vikings wouldnt be bad.... but he will get a nice pay day either way.... you have to compensate for him so he is worth the money.... Faneca isnt worth more then 2 mill a year.... but thats almost any guard.... gaurds are easy to find and you can almost just throw some o line tweener in there and they will be just as good as faneca, Hutchinson is in a league of his own but outside of him there really isnt other guards worth the buck.... Stall worth would be best fitted to go to denver.... especially once they get rid of walker they will need a guy to take pressure off the next TO in Marshal.... But stallworth is worth the money.... he has speed he breaks tackles and he competes hard.... I have never been impressed by turner... alot of backs can clean up whats left after tomlinson gets done..... but he will get ovr paid.... Randy proved when he wants to play he is the best in th business.... so as long as he is winning he i worth every dime!.... Julius Jones will be better then turner.... theres a reason why he started over barber.... and theres a reason why everyone that complained about it is sitting at home on a coach after a hard days work or is a journalist.... The Cowboys knew what they were doing.... of course you could argue.... why are they letting him go? and all I need to say is that they do plan on drafting a new one... so they apparently believe barber cant handle it.... Justin Smith isnt as good as he thinks he is.... But he might underrated.... its hard to base his stats on anything because he was the only real threat on that dline.... I actually have 2 guys for you that will be worth it all.... Madue Williams and Gibril Wilson.... watch there game tape....Williams is very underrated and wilson is starting to get the respect he deserves after a superbowl.... I think the worst move of the offseason could be the giants tradeing for deanglo hall... he is a problem child that cries.... Let him go to the ravens where they like cryers and murderers.... and Mendinhal is better then mcfadden.... I just wish I could have taken credit for it when I seen him tare up usc unsted of now when a few are starting to say it..... If I ever got a journalism degree I could have andrews job.... and make some real articles.... I would talk about thinks such as.... what in the blue **** was this team thinking.... but this was decent for him....

Report Offensive CommentI've watched Justin Smith since he came to the Bengals. He's great against the run, but a below average pass rusher at BEST. You always hear about his "motor" and that's fine and all, but in the NFL who can afford to pay top money for a DE that can't rush the passer? Maybe he'd be better inside on a smaller, more athletic line like Seattle's or in an already strong 3-4 that can keep him one-on-one, but I just can't see any contending team paying him huge money and putting him in a primarily pass rushing spot. Prove me wrong Justin - you've been a great character guy for the Bengals and I'll miss you for that, but I just don't think you're a top DE.

Report Offensive Commentsamuel is over rated, not even a legit a pro bowl corner. he is every bit as over rated as clement. stallworth, i just don't see him as a "stud". studs make bad teams better. he ddint do tat in NO, couldn't do anything on a great team in NE and was just OK as the #1 in Philly. It makes me sick to see these kind of players get paid like they are hall of famers when they wouldn't even be starting on some teams. I can name at least 10 guys I would ratehr have at each position that these about-to-be-over-paid free agents.

I pulled for him in N'awlins--but he could and was replaced--Colston is worth 2 Stallworths on any day. Then again, maybe his name says it all?
