In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a hard-core Dallas Cowboys fan and have been for over 40 years.  They were my father's team and I would quit following the NFL before I would change my favorite team.  The purpose of this blog is to spark a discussion about the term "America's Team".  Is this term appropriate in today's NFL?  If so, which team in most deserving of that moniker at this point in time?

The term,"America's Team", was initiated by an NFL Films program about the Dallas Cowboys.  I watched the initial airing and yes, I am that old.  The term caught fire and is still going strong.  In all fairness, there is some basis for this designation.  The Cowboys have a large following throughout the country, massive merchandise sales, and very high TV ratings for their nationally televised games.

My response to all this is :  "So What!!"  The Dallas Cowboys, or any other sports franchise, belongs to the fans of their team, not the whole country.  The rest of the country can get their own team or not.  I don't care!  I can be quite selfish and am not willing to share my team with anyone other than DC fans.

I am interested in your comments and will try to respond as time permits.  Negative comments are welcome, but I will give you advance warning.  I can also be spiteful and enough deragatory comments might motivate me to inflict another blog on FN members.  Enjoy or not, the choice is yours.

My heart is 70% Cowboys too.

Bring on the haters!!!!

All one needs to do as I stated in a post yesterday is visit any stadium in the NFL when the Cowboys are playing the home team! The number of Cowboy fans in the stands makes it hard to argue anything different. in terms of it being America's Team. But of course there's no denying my bias as one who's been a fan since the late 60's!

Ghost...is Garfield.

Be careful - just 70% Cowboys might get you put on probation.

I was always of the opinion that Tom Landry made the Cowboy's America's Team. Added to that , I suppose, could be the popularity of the TV series, "Dallas". Tom Landry retired, the TV show was canceled and the Cowboy's were just another team in the NFL. I miss Coach Landry, but I don't miss, "Dallas".

lady,

The original term came from NFL Films. However, Cowboys management did promote the concept.

I am a diehard 'Boys fan and enjoy the label because it makes people from the East coast so angry.

Good point. The irritation factor is significant.

That doesn't exactly mean anything, as the same is true for the Boys SB nemesis, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That is my point as well. Does any team deserve the moniker? My opinion is no. There are fans for all 32 teams in the league, with some teams having a larger fan base. Some teams have been more successful than others. None of that is germane to the subject. The teams belong to their fans, that's what matters most.

BTW, love that Steelers/Cowboys rivalry.

Lots of Cowboy haters out there who believe that the 'Boys gave themselves that name, and that's not so. Tex Shramm did indeed use it to promote the club, but who wouldn't?I myself have watched the Cowboys since Don Meredith and Co., although most of that is vague. Only other time I missed any games was when I was on active duty and in Scotland, or Cuba, or somewhere on the east coast. Win, lose or draw, the 'Boys are and will forever be my team My wife decided she would "try" to keep me from watching the Cowboys's games, and said that any sports was not allowed in the house. Wrong answer. That didn't happen then and it won't ever happen. The people who hate the Cowboys are just so jealous anyway. No team ever had one coach for 29 years, and be as successful as Tom Landry. They may have won more games (Shula for example), but no one but for Landry, has ever had 20 straight winning seasons. He should have had 2 more Super Bowls to his credit, as they should have beaten the Steelers the two times they met them. However, those games were fantastic to watch regardless.

The first two SB's with the Steelers were 'edge-of-your-seat' games. Very exciting games even though they were losses for our 'Boys.

Taking it to another sport, let's not forget The Atlanta Braves who were also designated "America's Team" due to Ted Turner's marketing and nationwide coverage of The TBS channel and all the Braves broadcasts. As bad as they were back then I don't remember too many folk's decrying foul at the moniker being attributed to them!

May 9, 2008  04:16 PM ET

That's true about the Atlanta Braves. Also, when they started winning, the bandwagon fans started coming out of the woodwork.

Dave. Just so you know, if it werent for Boston, you wouldnt have a Dallas Cowboys, they would be the Glasgow Cowboys. We won the revolution, we threw the damn tea in our harbor (which by the way still reeks of Lipton - and a few other things).. so technically, my Patriots are America's Team !

I hate the Dallas Cowboys and all their fanbase...
HAHAHAHA ....just kidding.. you know how much I love you and your workboots...

seriously? nice work Dave. Those who hate? its a mental impotence. They hate that their team cant get it up.

(btw - I heard Welker wants to be a Cowboy.. any truth to that ?)
