Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams has gone from fan favorite to most hated. So many fans are calling for him to be cut or traded. So many have already written him off. Why? Because he is a liability in coverage? Because he takes bad angles on plays? Or maybe because there has been a lack of his signature big hits? I agree, Roys game has diminished in recent years. I can't remember the last time he layed someone out, or stopped a RB benind the line of scrimmage. His confidence is shaky at best. Call me crazy, but I still believe he is the Cowboys best option at safety. I believe he has something to prove this year, and we will all see a rejuvinated Roy Williams this year. Here are 4 reasons why......
1. This will be Roy's 2nd year under Wade's defense. Last season Roy seemed confused at times, his uncertainty definitely cost the Cowboys some big plays. However, having played in Wade's system for a year I believe Roy will have a better understanding of his assignments, and not be caught out of position as much. ( Every NFL safety gets burned every now and then)
2. Roy will be getting more one on one attention from new secondary coach Dave Campo. The very same Dave Campo who drafted Roy out of Oaklahoma in 2002. If you remember, Roy had a monster rookie year. I believe Campo will be able to get Roy back to his fromer self, making plays behind the line, laying out guys and making INT's.
3. With an upgraded secondary (Pacman, Jenkins) Roy will not be asked to do as much. We all know Roy has been a liability in coverage since coming into this league. Roy is a run stopping safety, he delivers the big hits. He has never been a "cover safety," why would we suddenly expect him to be? I do think he can improve his coverage skills, but why is everyone writting him off? Because he can't cover the likes of Shockey, or Cooley? They make alot of players look foolish.
4. Finally, Roy has something to prove this year. He is a tremendous competitor, and hears everything being said about him. He definitly has the talent to be an elite NFL safety, he's not too old or injured. So no excusses this year Roy.

Report Offensive CommentRoy Williams is a idiot
Before he was drafted Sports Illustrated ran a article on him about how he was going to change the position (HA) despite being dumber than a brick.
Nothing can help when you have somebody with the IQ of a 6th grader playing SAFETY OF ALL THINGS in the NFL.
Hamlin needs to be the SS. Pat Watkins at FS.
Or Anthony Henry at FS... he's getting too slow to be a dependable corner.

Report Offensive CommentI guess being "dumber than a brick" gets you 5 Pro Bowls in 6 years in the NFL. And how is Pat Watkins all of a sudden better than Roy Williams? What has he ever done to prove himself, besides getting lit up his rookie year before getting benched? Moving Henry to safety is like robbing Paul to pay Peter. You are taking our 2nd best corner to play a position he hasn't played since his junior year in college (1999.) Just doesn't make sense to me. Roy may not have changed the safety position, but has at least proven he can play at a high level.

Report Offensive CommentLet me start by saying I am as big a Cowboy fan as you can be. I named my daughter after the late great Tom Landry, mine and my wifes first dog Roy and I have a framed autographed Roy Williams jersey (that I want to burn every Sunday i watch him play).
1. Other safeties do get burned now and then, he gets burnt whenever the Offense has the chance. Does he care to learn the defense? That is the real question?
2. Campo may have drafted him and he may have excelled. WHY? Because he had the great Darren Woodson mentoring him and covering his __. Maybe Campo deserves some credit but until I see otherwise I will give it to Woody.
3. Roy was a run stopping safety, he did deliver the big hits. Me and my boys watched every play of every game and I can't remember one play that made us get up and yell by Roy, at least a positive one, he pissed us off plenty. Their may be help, but does he remember how to tackle correctly or put a lick on anyone anymore.
4. He has heard everything being said about him for the last 2 years and he always deflects the blame to his teammates, coaches and media. Being rewarded with pro bowl trips he didn't deserve didn't help either. Does he WANT to get better? Does he truly realize he NEEDS to get better?
5 As for the robbing Paul to pay Peter, well Henry is slipping in his own right, he got tore up in the playoff game with his 10 yard cushion. He is no longer the 2nd best corner on the team. In fact by next year he could be the 5th best. T- New, Pac man, Jenkins and Scandrick are all more talented than him. I think he is a better fit at safety because he is a good ball hawk if nothing else.
In the end I am right their with you hoping to see the old Roy. Can he be what he was? I hope you are right, cause if so I don't see a weak spot on that D and life will be GOOD. All in all I like your sunny outlook, It's just not in me to be a good homer all the time.
GO COWBOYS!!

Report Offensive CommentRoy is a beast! I don't care what people say, Witten, Shockey, Gates are TE's that are unstoppable. We see it every game with Witten, do teams fire thier Safeties after Witten blows them up. I don't think so! I also disagree with the big hits, Every game, I mean every game he comes up and punishes someone. There is a reason why his peers vote him into the pro bowl year in and year out, because they know what they are talking about, that's why! It's ridiculous fans blame everything on him, I believe if he's used right, he can change the game.
