For my first SEC Blog, I've decided to pick one player from each team to watch out for this season. Some may be players who could challenge for bigs awards. Others, however, may just be able to help their team pull out a W each week. Nevertheless, Here's my list:
Georgia: Knowshon Moreno, RB: This guy is amazing, and most so-called "experts" are already saying he can win the Heisman. Now I'm not arguing this, because I believe it's true that he can, but Moreno will really have to have a great season in order for him to win the Heisman and for Georgia to live up to expectations.
Tennessee: Jonathan Crompton, QB: With Eric Ainge (finally) gone to the NFL, the Vols will need a strong QB in order to win games in the SEC. Crompton has already been hurt in spring practice, so he really needs to have a good year to prove to all of us that he can be a starting quarterback.
Florida: Tim Tebow, QB: Last year for the Gators to win, the equation was simple: Tebow healthy=win, Tebow hurt=loss(see UGA game for more details). Look for Tebow to have another outstanding year this season, and for him to be at the running (again) for the Heisman.
South Carolina: Chris Smelley, QB: South Carolina has had problems lately with their QBs, so Smelley needs to stay out of trouble and lead his Gamecock teammates to victory.
Kentucky: Dicky Lyons, WR: Lyons' stats so far aren't really outstanding, but I have a feeling that the Wildcats will rely on Lyons more now that Andre' Woodson is gone. Expect to hear a lot from Dicky Lyons this year.
Vanderbilt: Chris Nickson, QB: The Commodores have struggled even when they have had good players(i.e. Jay Cutler, Earl Bennett), so don't expect the win column for Vanderbilt to grow with Nickson. Although you may not here much from Nickson this year, I think he can put up some good numbers.
LSU: Brandon LaFell, WR: LaFell is an underrated player for the Tigers. I think he will be someone who will be able to make big catches this year in route to a ten-win or better season for LSU.
Auburn: Brad Lester, RB: Auburn has had a rich history of great runningbacks, and Lester has the ability to join that group if he can stay healthy. Expect Lester to be near the top of the runningbacks in the SEC when this season ends.
Alabama: John Parker Wilson, QB: JPW is now a senior, so I think that he will have a great year and will be a darkhorse for the Heisman. A lot of people will probably disagree but JPW is usually consistent and makes smart passes.
Arkansas: Reggie Fish, RB: Most people only know Fish from the trick play he ran against Auburn a couple of years ago,(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhFnneoT3Fo) but I think he can really become an excellent player for the Razorbacks, who lost their top 2 RBs this year in the NFL Draft.
Ole Miss: Mike Wallace, WR: Wallace put up good numbers last year, topping the SEC in yards per catch (18.8). This resulted in Wallace being named Third Team All-SEC by Phil Steele. Wallace is a senior this year, and I think he will at least be named Second Team All-SEC.
Mississippi State: Anthony Dixon, RB: This was probably the only player from the West that I thought of right off in naming him a player to watch. Dixon had a great 2007 season, finishing with 1,066 yards. I think Dixon is an awesome runningback, and can compete for many awards if he stays healthy.
Well, there you have it. Please comment and tell me what you think of my picks.

I think at least one team has a great defensive player right? I think with all the great offensive talent in the SEC, some teams have to some key defensive players. Am I wrong?

You have to say Demetrious Byrd for LSU, he's a senior this eason and made a ton of clutch catches last season, while Lafell droped a ton of passes last season.

Good analysis,
I agree with LSUrocks1, LaFell's nickname is 50/50 because he drops as many as he catches. D. Byrd on the other hand is and will be the premier receiver for LSU. The only regret is that we only have him for two years because he was a JUCO guy.

i would have to agree with you on a lot of it. but i do think that casey d- i- c- k, the hogs quarterback is going to light it up this year, he is a senior and i know he wants to show the fans who have been on him, including me, that he is a good quarterback. sorry about the wise crack of the other hog fan, hope we don';t have many of them. who knows coach Petrino may have some trick plays with Fish at running back, after all that one Fish play . seemed to work out pretty good against Auburn. he is small, so he could hide behind the offensive lineman, to make it hard for the defense to know where he is at. nice article.
