I think it all depends on how you define the best QB of all-time I would say
If you want championships Otto Graham has 7,
If you want Stats Dan Marino is your man,
If you want Innovation, Sammy Baugh invented the forward pass,
If you want a clutch player Joe Montana is your ideal pick,
If you want the ability to improvise you have to go with Fran Tarkenton,
If you want leadership Johnny Unitis is the guy,
If you want a Field General you will say Peyton Manning,
If you want a rocket arm and Likableness Brett Farve is your man,
And If you like some are in complete love with the modern era you will say Tom Brady,
My point is it is impossible to say who the best QB of all-time is because everyone has there own curriculum that they look for in a great QB, and that makes it impossible to say who's the best unless there is an established Curriculum made by the NFL for finding the best QB of all-time.
Stats are impossible to compare between players because of the fact that they all played in a different Era against very different player and different play calling tendencies, for example you can't compare Dan Marino and Sammy Baugh simply because Sammy got to pass the ball like 10 times a game before the roughing the passer and pass interference call were ever created, while Marino was protected by the rules alot more and got to throw the ball 30 times a game.
You can't use championships because guys like Marino played on bad teams most of there career
You can't use leadership ability because modern era QB have more cameras around to see there leadership ability then players like Sammy Baugh,
So please NFL, Hall of Fame, somebody make us a curriculum that can makes sense of all this and put this debate to an end once and for all.

Good blog. I don't know if there ever will be a fair curriculum for deciding who the best qb of all time is. As you said I think the only really fair thing to do is base it on generations.

Most of the quarterbacks on your list fall short in at least one of the categories you created. Not Favre, however. He won a championship and went to two Super Bowls when surrounded by talent, won games nearly by himself when he wasn't, guided many late-game comebacks, was looked to by coaches and teammates as a guy who gave you a chance to win every game, was the toughest player in the NFL, never missed a game, put up unreal numbers despite playing in Green Bay where 2-3 games a year it's so cold that passing the ball downfield is barely an option (Favre's career numbers in 16 years in a warm-weather city would have improved by 40 or so touchdowns and thousands of yards), and he played in a style that was fan friendly. And he not only had the strongest arm, but was willing to flick a ball underhanded, if that's what it took to win.

I'm a bears fan so maybe I'm not qualified to weigh in, but I'd say Steichen is on the money. I think the question that we should ask is, if starting a franchise, who would you pick to be your quarterback? I don't see how you go with anybody other than Favre. Great teammate, leader, arm, intangibles, toughness, etc. As for the old time quarterbacks, you can't count anybody before Unitas. Since they didn't play in a game where the forward pass was an every other down occurence, they can't be considered. They didn't know how to do it because they never had to. You could say that a guy like Sammy Baugh was a great qb of his era, but a qb of his era, was not even a qb by today's standards. I'd say Favre, Montana, Elway, Marino, Young. By the way, I hate the Packers, the niners, and the broncos, so I'm totally unbiased. Oh wait, I forgot about Manning. Oh screw it, it's impossible to say. I retract my whole blog.

Why???
His Stats are mediocre compared to Farve's and Marino's
Farve was a better scrambler
Farve had a better arm
Farve is more likable
The only place Montana beat farve in was championships and that's only because Montana had a better team

If you want leadership, on-field presence, and a guy who knew how to win I would take Joe Namath in his prime over anybody in history, but greatness over a career has to be Joe Montana, who edges out Favre and Marino b/c of the rings.

Never any mention of bradshaw.....i'm not saying he should be mentioned as the best ever, but 4 super bowls deserves an honorable mention.
