A short follow-up to yesterday's blog, in keeping with the "True Media Story" aspect of these pieces I write.
Since you're curious, you probably have wondered: just how do I come up with these "TMS" pieces?? Simple. I'm older than the vast majority of you on here, which gives me a perspective of mixing pop culture and sports in FN. So I would be remiss if I didn't impart a little history lesson to the masses.
(Admit it, you had no clue who Ken Venturi was until I wrote yesterday's piece. Right??)
Anyway, back to today's business. As you're aware by now, Tiger Woods has decided to have surgery on his knee--thus effectively shutting down for the remainder of the season. Which makes this U.S. Open all the more myth-like for Tiger. The legend grows even more.
And yet, I can't help but think of the line from a John Ford movie that fits Tiger to a T.
At the end of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", after Jimmy Stewart's character finishes explaining how his legend is all a lie, he asks of Gary Merrill's character "You're not going to print this??", Merrill's response...this is where Tiger fits in all this...goes:
"This is the West, sir. When the myth becomes legend, print the legend."
I can't think of a more fitting line to describe one Eldrick Woods, and his exploits on the golfing landscape.
