I'm not trying to piss off any Laker fans, and yes, I'm a Celtic fan, but I never thought Kobe should have been selected as the MVP long before Boston and the Lakers got to the finals.  It's almost hard to believe they came to that conclusion.

I'm not sure what criteria the sports writers use, but they can't be basing it soley on stats.  Although I'm not sure what else you could use as a barometer for such an award.  While it's true Kobe was first in scoring this season, although only by 2 pts per game over Lebon James.

I heard chants of Kobe for MVP months before the season was over.  It seemed every year he got beat out by someone else.  Maybe the sports writers didn't want to deal with the backlash that was sure to occur if they didn't select Kobe.  Maybe they just voted for the most popular player, or the name the heard the most on ESPN, either way, I think they got it wrong.

Kobe was only in the top ten in 2 catagories: pts (1) and steals (8).  He was 40th in rebounds, 58th in blocks, 11th in assists, 20th in FG%.  He truly is not a team player on a team sport.  Ask yourself what happens if he doesn't score 35-40 pts.  Name one person on the Lakers that will step up when Kobe has an off night.  NONE! I' not sure why, but it seems like they are all puppets and their sole job is to get the ball to Kobe.

Until Kobe helps make the others better players the Lakers probably won't win a championship. To me, this makes Kobe a one dimensional player and thus, not an MVP.

My pick would have been Dwight Howard or Lebron James.

Pau Gasol as was evident by the 32-6 record after they acquired him

June 19, 2008  04:58 PM ET

Kobe had 10 assists 3 times in the playoffs..........Withhout a legit post presence ala Bynum.......

Kobe deserved it because they were the best team in the West and NOBODY expected that, even after the trade for Gasol.......

June 19, 2008  05:13 PM ET

The MVP isn't about the best team, its the best player.

June 19, 2008  05:26 PM ET

He was the MVP. It was almost comical to see how much respect the greatest defense of the decade, the Boston Celtics, had for Kobe. They always had a guy on him with another guy coming as soon as the ball was put on the floor.

Besides, the "M-V-P" chants have gone on every year for I-don't-know-how long at the Staples Center. Backlash has certainly never been an issue. Why make it one now?

Next, Kobe is, without a doubt in my mind, not the most popular player. He is hated by the masses, which has played a part in his troubles of garnering the MVP award.

His stats may have not been the most impressive, but he brought the all-around game and led his team to the #1 seed in an EXTREMELY tough conference that was chalk full of parity.

He IS TOO a team player and has shown it before if you watched a couple games this season. Kobe showed parts of his team game in the FIBA World Championships last year, and showed more of it in stretches this season. He looks for his teammates WAY MORE than people even dare to give him credit for.

Your saying that no one else can step up for the Lakers only helps Kobe's case. It makes it even more remarkable that they've been this successful without another key player. Also, if you think Kobe is a one-dimensional player who can only score, then you don't understand what you're watching (and I try to say that in the nicest way possible). It's nice to know you would have side-stepped the second-best candidate for MVP in Chris Paul and given it right to LeBron or Dwight, who, in my opinion, were 3rd and 4th respectively.

Now, you may say I am some homer, but I am a Suns fan who believes in sticking up for good players when other people are saying otherwise. Everyone has been so damn fickle with Kobe. One minute the comparisons to Michael are out of this world; the next is that he didn't even deserve an MVP trophy when, in actuality, he did.

Rant over.

June 19, 2008  05:35 PM ET

This voting Kobe MVP makes me think of the Oscars when Henry Fonda was given the award mainly because he was on his deathbed at the time the vote was taken. Or when Susan Lucci finally won a daytime Emmy award after something like 19 loses. The award may have been deserved or it may have been given out of pity. The fact is, Kobe has it this year, like it or not.

June 19, 2008  05:53 PM ET

Nice Rant, and you make some good points, but you didn't convince me that his was the MVP. Also I know exactly what I'm watching. When one player constantly scores 15-20 points more than any on his teammates how does that make him a team player.

He also yells at his teammates when he thinks they missed a play and I watched that all by myself. I've never watched his teammates yell back. I don't think that's allowed

Showing respect to Kobe has nothing to do with being MVP. He should be respected as should a lot of other players.

I'll give you Chris Paul, he is a very good player, but I can't give you Kobe as MVP.

Also I never liked to compare two players from different eras, there's too much difference and its not always a fair comparison.

roxalot is a fool. Pau Gasol HURT the Fakers in this series because he was as soft as Charmin.

June 19, 2008  06:59 PM ET

I can't believe that anyone could try to take the MVP away from him after you al finallyl got the chance to see what kind of team he really had to carry all this season and that includes Gasol.

You don't reach the NBA Finals, to game 6 with that sort of rag tag team of young puppies, and inconsistent pretenders without being nothing short of amazing.

He was Two games away from snagging the Crown and out come all these idiots who are using their hate for his personality to down his professional accomplishments.

Like a bunch of Hyenas, biting at the ankle of a young lion who fell a bit short of taking over all of Africa.

This is pathetic....

June 19, 2008  07:22 PM ET

Am I the only one that is getting a bit tired of the arrogant strutting that some of these Celtics fans are reeking with ?

Like their team winning now makes them the overlords and judges on every team and player in the NBA, when most of them don't know the history of their own team, let alone others, including the Lakers, because if they did they would have a bit more respect.

What also they don't realize.... after 22 years in the dungeon, is that the Celtics now have a bright red Target on their old backs.

Every team and stadium in the NBA will be after their blood.

Every game will have to be with the effort of a Finals because every team will want to prove that they can beat the champs.

That's why it's so difficult to repeat !

I for one will sit back and enjoy seeing how spry those old guys will be at the end of next season,...not only because of the strain to their bodies, but because mentally, the goal has been achieved, the hunger, no longer gnawing at their entrails.

So keep up the strutting, and insults, ..it makes for a more interesting coming season....

June 19, 2008  07:46 PM ET

You can't say that during the regular season. The only reason the Lakers where 57-25 in the regular season was because of Kobe. They wouldn't have made the playoffs w/o Kobe let alone the finals. He was definitely a different player in Boston. But then again the whole team was!

Gasol was never the same after his injury...

June 19, 2008  07:52 PM ET

Dwight Howard... That's just silly!

June 19, 2008  10:13 PM ET

Welcome Back to the NBA Celtic Fan. Don't get too comfortable, you won't be staying long. You see, you mortgaged your future in that highway robbery of a trade between Lurch and Danny Boy. (Does anyone think that deal actually goes down if these guys aren't former Celtics?) Until then, we'll put up with your nonsensical musings about the NBA while patiently awaiting the day when you return to the whining little losers we all know and love.

im a kobe fan but i have to correct u that actually lebron james was the scoring champion this year not kobe

June 19, 2008  11:56 PM ET

I just checked my stats again Kobe 30.1, Lebron 28.2

June 20, 2008  12:14 AM ET

dwight howard?! lmao

June 20, 2008  03:42 AM ET

As much as i hate kobe for being a horrible team mate i will defend him winning. it is most valuable player, not team mate not team. pull kobe from the lakers and they crumble as would the cavs, magic or hornets. remember to leave out the post season as well when looking at things. I would like to see where dwight, lebron and paul were ranked in pts, assists, steals, rebounds and fg%

June 20, 2008  08:47 AM ET

He was definitely the MVP.

dwight: pts 19th, assists:86th, Steals:T50th, reb: 1st, Fg%: 3rd
Lebron: pts: 2nd, assists: 4th, steals: 5th, reb: 21st, Fg%: 49th
Chris P. pts: 6th, assists: 1st, steals: 1st, reb: 49th, Fg% 12th

maybe a stretch for Howard, but Paul and James were better. (1)

That's actually a pretty good comparison, Cass. He needs to get mad or somethin'. He's not playing nearly as physical as he should be.

when kobe was top in many stat categories, no one wanted to give him the MVP either. people like you will always try to find a reason not to give him the MVP award but he deserved it this season. when kobe had amazing stats people complained he didn't make his teammates better, this year, before bynum went down, he had almost the exact same team as last year, and the lakers were in the western conference elite. he led a team with a lot less talent than the boston celtics all the way to the finals. dwight howard's and lebron james' teams were both out by the second round of the EASTERN confernce playoffs.
