Fullback is not a word you hear often in the Jets organization. In fact fullback hasn't been that big for New York it was almost non-existant last year. But the Jets have landed some good players this year and of course along with that came a few FB's that were added to the mix. Since the Jets are trying to do things differently, fullback might see a big role this season which will help increase New York's run power and give them more options to go with.
Antonio "Tony" Richardson: The four time Pro Bowler should definetly refresh the position with his great run skills that earned him those honors. Even though signing a one year contract, Richardson will also block for Thomas Jones and you can bet that he will be a damn good blocker. Richardson has served as the lead blocker for Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson, Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson, helping them rush for more than 1,200 yards in a combined total of six seasons. And if he can do that, Thomas Jones will probably put up some good numbers once again which is good news for the run game.
Justin Valentine: Orginally playing tailback, Valentine switched to fullback during college and made the most of every carry he would recieve only making a few mistakes here and there. Valentine describes himself as a "leader" and is also a great blocker and reciever. He also has a great character meaning no Adam Jones of our own. He also calls himself a "fiery competetor, he works hard and is humble."
Even though not known by many, Valentine appears to be a good FB to keep and mold into a great player. I see him having an extended future with New York.
A.J. Schable: There isn't a lot known about Schable however he is a TE/FB/DE combo who appeared in 11 games as a fullback in his rookie season for the Arizona Cardinals in 2006. Schable again attended training camp with Arizona in 2007, but was released during the preseason. He recorded 28 sacks as a defensive end at South Dakota, including 19 as a senior in 2005.
Since Schable isn't well known it is hard to tell what will happen with him ... (possibly cut due to 53 man roster) ... But if A.J. can prove his worth he could be used at his three different position although TE/FB seem to be his main positions that teams have looked into. (Schable could potentially fill the TE spot if Baker goes walking).
Jehuu Caulcrick: Well, he is a tailback and fullback. Who knew? At Michigan State, he played tailback and part time fullback due to his large size (255 pounds). In 2007 he had 872 yards on 222 attempts and 21 touchdowns. Sports Illustrated listed Jehuu Caulcrick as a "bruising" runner and on NFLDraftscout.com, Caulcrick was rated 9 out of 98 fullbacks going into the NFL. Even though tailback seems to be his more well known position, if he is that big of a bruiser fullback as SI claims then the Jets just got the jackpot ...
Caulcrick could potentially double up as both RB and FB and if the Jets decided to let Tony Richardson walk for some reason the Jets will at least have a solid back up to block for Thomas Jones.
