Because what better way to celebrate the freedom we enjoy in this great country than by making cheap cracks about pro athletes:
• Brett Favre has shot down reports that he has an "itch" to return to the NFL. Sounds like people are twisting his words. I mean, who hasn't had a basic case of jock itch?
• More bad news for A-Rod. Now the New York Post is reporting that not only have he and his wife split up, but Mrs. A-Rod is shacking up with rocker Lenny Kravitz in Paris. Still, A-Rod isn't talking to the press, lest it take away time from tracking down Lisa Bonet.
• Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said Wednesday that the team's lack of offense was "getting ridiculous," and the Yanks promptly went out and scored 18 runs against the Rangers. Come on, fellas. Don't you know that'll only encourage him?
• Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown has resumed workouts after pulling up in the Belmont Stakes last month. I guess he had the itch to return.
• The World Series of Poker starts today in Las Vegas, though the winner won't be determined until November. What do they think this is, the NBA playoffs?
• Coach Mike Krzyzewski says that his U.S. Olympic basketball team isn't going to China "to sell shoes." Well, obviously, not with the dollar in the crapper. Bad time to be a seller.
• The Sonics have agreed to pay Seattle as much as $75 million so they can move to Oklahoma City next season. Seattle hopes to use the cash to send the Mariners with them.
