It’s July 4th, and we have the good fortune of having seven days games available to us fans.
Back in the sepia colored days of men in wool jackets and flat caps, baseball was played in the warmth of the summer sunshine. But the world has changed with the advent of stadium floodlighting, Nike trainers and the coffee culture. The weekday day game seems like a thing of the past, going the way of the T-Rex and as scarce as hens’ teeth.
For you who live in the lower 48 this may not be a big deal, but please think of those of us living in Europe and other parts of the world. The day game is at times the only way we can get to catch a game live on TV or the radio – not “as live” the next day in the late evening.
Day games on a Monday are a rare thing. Tuesdays seem to be no better.
Wednesdays are better and there is a change of a day game but not always. Some weeks there are a lot of day games on Thursday, other weeks there are none. Fridays are almost always night games.
A 1:05pm game is a 6:05pm (British summer time) for me, but a 7:05pm game is 12:05 am. And given that a game is in the order of 3 hours or more, it makes for a very late night or very early morning if I stay up to watch a game.
Please, MLB, don’t kill off the day games. Use them as a way to take this great game to the world live, and give us foreign fans the chance to watch and listen live to the sport that we love. Watching a taped game just isn’t the same.
