Evening, loyal readers!
My day is winding down, and I flipped on the WWL to wind down and get ready for bed. I knew the Home Run Derby was on and was looking forward to catching a few batters before hitting the hay.
I know some baseball purists don't like the HR Derby, and to be honest, I don't like some of the aspects of the spectacle. But for the most part, I love the Derby!
I love seeing the ball players sitting cross-legged on the field watching the hitters. It's like you can see the little boys they once were, wide-eyed, without a care in the world, happy as can be because they are in a ball park. They are truly enjoying the game, without the sometimes nasty business end of Major League Baseball creeping in.
I love seeing the ball players' kids on the grass with them, cozying up to daddy in their miniature jerseys, jumping in joy at each home run hit--no matter who's hitting them. I love seeing the kids running in the outfield catching the balls that don't quite make it. I love it when the kids run up with Gatorade to the batter after they finish.
Yeah, I know it's kitschy. But when I'm watching a ball stop mid-air as it comes in contact with the bat, then reverse course as it arcs up, up, up, so high it gets lost in the lights, then starts floating down, down, down...well...it takes me back to my childhood. Just like those ball players on the field, it feels like the first time I experienced the rush of the game. The love affair is brand-new again.
So bring on the Kitsch!

I agree, Kari. It's fun to watch the players become kids again and realize why they got there in the first place-to have fun.

I actually found myself watching the derby Monday night. Hamilton's first round was epic and a joy to watch. Of course I went to bed after that can't stay up late and make it to work by 6:30 am.
By the way:
