So the Bears have inked a new RB in Kevin Jones formerly of the Detroit Lions.  This move is a response to losing Cedric Benson and needing help in the weakest part of the offense.  It is clear that the Bears have declared Matt Forte as the the front runner to start this season against the Colts.  Even with a talented rookie in that position it is important to remember that he will not be able to make strides behind an offensive line that is old and could not open up holes last year except to let Rex Grossman or Brian Griese get sacked.  Kevin Jones if anything will take some of the carries that this young RB will have and allow for him not to get hurt or worn out in a very long NFL season.  In todays NFL we see a two back system in most team backfields for good reason.  Adrian Peterson could not be a viable solution for the Bears since he is more needed on Special Teams.  Ultimately the Bears needed to make a move when they let go of Benson.

The upside to this deal is the possibility that he may be able to regain some of the magic that he was able to put together when he was healthy for the Lions.  If this were the case the Bears would have made the best offseason move in the NFL.  I can relate this situation to what the Chicago Cubs had been doing the past few years in signing guys like Dempster or Williamson to one year contracts after having major surgery.  The NFL and the MLB are two very different sports, but major injuries are had in both leagues that force teams to make tough decisions.  As it turns out the Cubs were able to find a 10 game winner this year and there is still another half year to go.  Williamson was a good pitcher that didn't end up staying with the Cubs, but did go to a team looking to bolster their bullpens.

Bottomline is the Bears have made themselves better without having to give up much.  I personally like the addition and hope the fire in his belly leads him to show up his former employers and give some validity to a run game that has been lacking in this city since Thomas Jones left.  You never know but it might even allow defenses to give our QB's time to throw the ball.  Of course we would need recievers to catch the ball.  An interesting season it will be.  Good luck Jones.

I don't think it was a good move. Kevin Jones isn't consistent and kind of washed up.

The Bears need a veteran and another RB. Who else out there is worth signing to help a depleted RB corps. Remember he comes at a league minimum and he will be playing for another contract.

A very good acquisition indeed..........the statement that he "is inconsistent" applied to what he did with the lamer Lions and NOT with what me the best OL in football today. As a 50 year Bear fan I love the move.
