We asked acclaimed chef Mario Batali if given the assignment to cook for five athletes, who are the athletes he would choose, and what meal would he prepare?
I've cooked for Tiger Woods at [his restaurant] Lupa but I would love to cook for him on a separate occasion. I'm a big fan of Paul Pierce and I'd like to see what he's all about. He looks like an interesting fellow as well as smart and crafty. Then I'd choose Michael Phelps. I'm a fan of the Olympics and I'd like to see what he's all about. Lorena Ochoa is a machine and she always looks tuned up. And I need a football player so how about Bart Starr? Once people sit down and eat, sharing food they actually enjoy, participating in the act of eating and the meal experience, their guard comes down to a certain extent and you can really see what they are all about because you put them on the same playing field.
What would I serve them if I was cooking for them in a restaurant? Well, if I was cooking for them in restaurant, what you want to do is give them options – especially sports guys and girls who have their own weird diets whether it is all carbs or no carbs. So I would serve them a five-course meal and tell them if they don't like a certain course, just back out. I'd start with a little antipasto, some kind of a marinated vegetable salad. Then we would have some kind of a pasta, maybe linguini with clams, but they could also have it without the shellfish. Then I would have some kind of a bird, maybe a quail or a squab and then maybe a steak. Then I'd finish with a fresh fruit and a cherry pie or cherry tart.
Now it's your turn. Tell us the athletes you'd like to have over for dinner.

She'd either withdraw from the dinner engagement due to an "injury", miss the cut after two courses, or somehow get herself DQ'd.

I am tempted but will not touch this . . . although I will say that cherry tart sounds like an oxymoron.
