It's going to be a crazy day in baseball today. Amy Winehouse crazy. And it's going to involve a New York team.

Why?

Because history tells us so.

On July 24, 1934, Yankees centerfielder Earle Combs, the famed leadoff hitter for Murderers Row, crashed into the wall at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis and suffered a fractured skull. He was out for the remainder of the season.

On July 24, 1978, Billy Martin resigned as Yankee manager, uttering the now-famous "one is a born liar (Reggie Jackson), the other (George Steinbrenner) a convicted one" comment.

On July 24, 1983, George Brett had a two-run home run off Goose Gossage disallowed against  the Yankees because the umps ruled that the pine tar on Brett's bat handle exceeded the 17 inches allowed in the rule. Brett was called out for illegally batting the ball, giving the Yankees a 4 -3 victory. The Royals immediately protested, and later American League President Lee MacPhail overruled his umpires.

On July 24, 1992,  Faye Vincent reinstated Steinbrenner to active boss of the Yankees, beginning in March 1993

On July 24, 1993, after Anthony Young lost his major league record 27th straight decision, Mets outfielder Vince Coleman tossed an M-100  from a moving car in the Dodgers parking lot, injuring two youngsters and a woman.

On July 24, 2004, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek were ejected after inciting a bench- clearing brawl during the third inning of a game at Fenway Park. Reported the AP: "With two outs in the top of the third inning, Boston starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo hit Rodriguez on the left arm with a 1-1 pitch. Rodriguez stared down Arroyo and then had words with Boston catcher Jason Varitek after taking a few steps up the first base line. Rodriguez and Varitek then started fighting and bot h benches emptied." The Sox won the game 11-10, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth off Mariano Rivera.

The Mets play the Phillies at 12:10 p.m. in New York. Get ready for fireworks, and hopefully no injuries.

So someone on the Mets or Phillies is gonna smoke crack and then win a Grammy?

July 24, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Excellent work Rich.

July 24, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Yankees aren't playing today, so must be the Mets' turn.

I've been seeing replays of the George Brett incident all day today...all I can say is WOW.

Good ol' George looked like he was fired out of a cannon coming out of that dugout.

Sadly, when I think of George Brett, I don't remember all of his baseball prowess. I remember him looking like a crazy man coming out of that dugout and his case of hemmoroids. Gosh, don't you think they could have doctored up that injury a bit? Like called it a 'Glutel Strain'?

Blame it on the Rain, SeanNJ.

It's better than Kaz Matsui's "**** fissuring" (will the censor allow that i wonder?) this year.

And that game should never have been replayed, he broke the rule, he was out.

I don't think I have ever heard any of her alleged music. I had to google her to see what she looked like. I wish I hadn't.

SeanNJ - Amy Winehouse is a very talented musician. Frankly, a lot of her music (and the sound of her voice) could easily be described as a modern version of the old Motown style. She's well worth listening to.

Same here Sean. I don't get her and why she is even famous. I actually heard one of her songs and it's terrible (IMHO). Another media-made celebrity.

Our local paper ran the whole Brett episode this morning (pictures and article). That was totally uncharacteristic of Brett. Billy the Kid pulled a fast one on him and definitely knit-picked the rules to his advantage. I would have loved to see George charge Billy.....talk about some fireworks!

Good stuff Rich on the date!

She does have an old-school type sound, although her lyrics are rather lacking in substance. Just make sure you pirate it instead of supporting the habit of celebutards like that.

Yeah, AW, I agree that Matsui's...condition...was disturbing, and it should have been kept under wraps.

Just as an aside, in the '80's, there was a player on the Bears named Matt Suey. Everytime I hear Matsui's name, I have to stop and remember that it's Kaz that they are discussing.

BW - nit-picking the rules and selecting your spots to ask for things like that is just gamesmanship, when you know the rule's being broken. I remember a Rangers-Caps game when Jagr had just come over to the Rangers, when the Caps waited until OT or they already had a PP or some situation like that and asked the refs to measure the curve of his stick.. because they knew he used an illegal one after having just played for them. Gave em an extra edge, although I don't remember now whether they scored or not. Annoyed me at the time, but that's gamesmanship for you.

See, I don't call that gamesmanship, I call it hypocritical.

wow, the head blogger did research on a blog subject. isn't that against Pete's rules?

As a hockey coach, I loved pulling the stick measurement move.

We were playing in the championship game in tournament in Pittsburgh against a team that was filled with more talented players than ours, but that did not play as a team well at all. We were hanging in with them, scored a goal to go ahead with about 2 minutes to go, and right after the goal was scored, one of them lost her cool and took a 2 min penalty. My captain mentioned the illegal stick (with bright orange tape to boot!) being used by their best player. We called for the measurement, it was illegal, and we spent the rest of the game on a 2 skater advantage.

Talk about pissed... that player had just bought the stick from the rink pro shop that morning before the game.... watching her implode in the penalty box is one of my top 5 hockey moments.

The only problem with this blog is that it contains facts. Somehow this is the top story on the SI list right now.

What is this you speak of? Clearly, women athletes never lose their cool...
