As a huge football fan and the Mom of a West Point cadet; Caleb Campbell's story pucnhed a lot of buttons for me.  While I think the timing of the policy reversal was terrible for everyone...Caleb, the Lions, USMA, and the Army...i also understand that the Committment to the Army comes first. Whatever the assignment.  Whenever it's made.  Questioning the decisions/chain of command are not an option. Period.  Cadets spend the first 6 weeks at West Point gettign that drilled in their psyche.  It is a primary part of their training and survival- to identify and understand their role in the chain and do their part.  It doesnt matter what all of us think about the decision.   You pick up on that by listening to Caleb's comments regarding his situation.

From a football standpoint - the question about whether the Lions should be compensated for their loss of a draft pick is intriguing.  Although, I suppose, every draft pick is a risk of some magnitude.

I respect the military's decision - they did give him four years at one of the finest academic institutions in the nation at no cost, so in a way, he's there because of him.

I think it's silly to suggest the Lions should be compensated for the pick, however. You draft the player's rights, caveat emptor (buyer beware) comes to mind. Clearly, prior commitments take priority.

With all due respect to Mr. Campbell, though, this is a seventh-round pick, most of those are cut their rookie seasons. I hate to bring it up, but the argument can easily be made that Campbell was a public relations pick; an All-Gain-No-Risk selection for the fan-starved Lions. With Marinelli having a military background, it seems pretty obvious they would take him, and that selection gained far more in public attention than the fact they can't sign him hurt them.
