Devin Hester can not afford to miss camp. All of us by now, know how much he'll be paid this year, and most of us also know how much any team can penalize a player by not showing up to camp each day of camp. Show I'm not going to waste your time, or mine, and reiterate those facts. Though, I feel like I already have. His hamstring wasn't tender on Friday, they just gave him the day off, and Jerry and Lovie were just glad that he reported.
You think Devin didn't miss his teammates? He reports to camp by waking up teammates around 1 a.m. Friday morning. Usually, I would be on the antagonist here, and say that Hester has not proven himself as a receiver, and until he does, don't even think about rewarding him until he enters the final year of his rookie contract. But, can anyone agree that unproven rookies drafted late in the 5th or 6th round of this years draft deserve more money to play this year than NFL record breaker Devin Hester? The obvious question is whether you give him wide-receiver money? If I was Jerry Angelo, I would lace a contract full of incentives, which is probably what is being worked out right now along with a substantial signing bonus. Keep in mind, that whatever contract is being proposed right now will be in jeopardy of being re-negotiated a year, or two from now, if Hester proves himself as a consistently productive receiver. Yeah, so that depends on consistent quarterback, offensive line, and running back play. So, they'll most likely give him tweenie money; just enough to show that he's important, but not elite receiver cash. Which should still appease him.
I'm as optimistic as I normally am about the success of the Bears this season. But, I'm just praying that we stay healthy. I'm glad that Benson is gone. I wish that we never traded away Thomas Jones. I still feel it was Benson's fumble in the Super Bowl was the changing point in that game. And, at that point Grossman just tried to make plays. I'm also glad Moose is gone (I grew tired of his lame TD celebration), he had too many drops, and at times his effort was lackadaisical at best. If everyone can stay healthy this season including: Dvoracek, Urlacher, M. Brown, Vasher, T. Harris. Basically everybody on defense. I feel like we can return to the Super Bowl form, no matter who plays quarterback this season. Rashied Davis, looks bigger and faster than he ever has, and I still remember the speed that Mark Bradley showcased in the Jets game two seasons ago. So, if Ron Turner finally stays true to his word and utilizes Olsen, and Hester on offense, hopefully, that will open some things up. Not too many offensive lines can look very good if your one dimensional, especially if the offensive line isn't very good to begin with. Not that any of this will matter if our defense stays healthy. And, if it does the Chicago Bears will be the ultimate Super Bowl sleeper this season.
Pay Hester, so we can get mid-field position on every possesion, and if our offense is dismal, Gould and our defense will be enough. But, if we have an offense, and Orton proves to resemble something different, or, Grossman can rid himself of those backfooted throws to the players wearing different jerseys that we all know so well, than this season should be really great.
BTW: As I'm currently watching Sportscenter, and as I use to watch Bulls/Cavs games in the 90's (thanks, Jordan), I never would have imagined that Brad Daugherty would have made a really good Nascar commentator. I know who really cares, right? But, who would have thought?
