Hey everyone good to be here...

It's Wednesday, which means time for another round of things that annoy me in sports.....

 Stupid Nicknames:

DiceK...A-ROD...K-Rod....Nimrod....Please stop!  I mean these have about as much imagination and creative pinache' as a Tiger Woods press conference.  I miss the days when nicknames were creative.  Remember former SF 49er William Floyd? While "Bar None" did not have a HOF career, his moniker was pretty cool.  Magic was certainly better than Earvin, and we all know a certain shoe co. I cannot mention due to present ligitgation involving my claim of coming up with the pump thingy in 1979, would not have made anywhere near the cash if they were hawking LEVITATING JORDANS or That Mike Guy is Light on His Feet Shoe.

What is worse than the generic nicknames?  Those who emboss these dumb ID's on themsleves. Kobe Bryant refers to himself as the Black Mamba?  I didn't know they ran amuk in Malibu or Lower Marion, PA? Shaq liked to refer to himself as the Big Aristotle, yet often reminded us more of the Big Lebowski.  And I have yet to see what question Allen Iverson serves as the answer to?  What are guys that cannot make it to practice Alex?  So if any of these would-be presidential candidates are looking for something serious to plant their flag on, may I suggest banning stupid thoughtless nicknames? Of couse, if athletes are going to give themselves nicknames, they should be required to at least match appropriately.  Try these on for size kids:

Roger "I'm not sure if i wanna play anymore, but I will take your money" Clemens

Curt "Al Sharpton/Jerry Fallwell" Shilling

A-Rodinma'pants from sitting under that stripper

Terrell "Look at me Dammit!" Owens

Curious for other suggestions.......

Thanks for your time!

One all time fave of a player giving himself a nickname was Freddy Mitchell. Dude dubbed himself "The Peoples Champion" and wore a champ belt on the sideline. What the hell was that about? He makes one great clutch catch in the playoffs then decides that he should be some sort of superstar. And the of course there was "FredEx" that he dubbed himself for a while. Where is he now? No idea. He isn't even on a roster. Actually, that makes the later nickname quite deserved.

Fred-Ex NFL player.
