You may have already heard about this but I am here to tell you anyway.  Paul Byrd has been traded to the Boston Red Sox for either a player to be named or cash.  If I were Cleveland, I would want cash, but lets see how it goes.

Byrd has been on fire lately, he is 4-0 in four starts with a 1.24 ERA.  The only word I can say is steroids, steroids, steroids.  Still, a quality pick-up that Boston took without question.  Tim Wakefield, who was having a good year but recently got injured, will have his spot taken over by Byrd until he returns so it was a smart move.  Also, Clay Buccholz will have his spot taken up by Charlie Zink thanks to his recent struggles.

Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA this year and he could be just the thing to push the Red Sox into the playoffs.  "Give me a few minutes before I talk," Byrd said as he packed up in the Indians' clubhouse. "I'm not lucid right now. I'm saying funny things. Give me a half-hour and I'll talk."  Okaay . . .

Next news, Gary Sheffield has been put on the waivers.  Sheff had a recent brawl with manager Jim Leyland.  He claimed that he was a "platoon hitter" and Leyland countered back by explaining what a platoon hitter is.  Sheffield responded by saying "I'm not playing every day so I'm a platoon hitter".  At the DH and LF spot, Detroit is rotating three players, Marcus Thames, Matt Joyce and, of course, Sheffield.

It is not clear who will go for him but one thing that is clear is that the Florida Marlins and Boston Red Sox have the most interest.  Detroit would probably like to get a relief pitcher in the deal.

Sheffield is making $14 million this year as well as the next and that is a pretty steep price to pay for a guy who is hitting under .200 for the month of August although he just hit a tying home run in the game I'm watching against Toronto.

You're right. I think Byrd is a solid pickup by the Sox
