I can barely wait for NBC's primetime coverage of Americans crumbling all over the track from five hours ago:

• Gymnast Shawn Johnson won her first gold medal of the Beijing Games after three silvers by edging fellow American Nastia Liukin on the balance beam Tuesday, with the judges placing a Chinese gymnast third. In a possibly related story, the imposing Bird's Nest next door might include a few more "twigs" tonight.

Michael Phelps has posed with all eight gold medals draped on his bare chest for the cover of this week's SI, which hits newsstands tomorrow. The image echoes the famous shot of Mark Spitz with his seven golds in 1972. The real question is whether in three decades, will everyone make fun of Phelps for his completely nude upper lip?

• Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said on his blog that he's leaning "very heavily" toward retirement from baseball. I don't blame him. Frankly, pitching in the majors can't compare to the raw adrenaline rush of blogging. Never mind the chicks, obviously.

• The Bears have picked Kyle Orton over Rex Grossman as their starting QB. They'll wait until later in the season to pick their finishing QB.

• The Bengals have re-signed WR Chris Henry, four months after cutting him following his fifth arrest in four years. Well, that's a shame. You hate to see an ex-con fall right back with the same tough crowd.

• The New York Post is reporting that A-Rod was spotted with two different "cuties" last week, one in New York and a second in Miami. Well, they'll be so happy to know he'll get off work a few weeks earlier this year than usual.

• 10 Spot Gathering reminder: We're all set for Saturday, Sept. 13. That afternoon, the plan is to visit the Sports Museum of America in downtown Manhattan. That night, we're already booked in the back room of Molly Pitcher's on the Upper East Side. As we get closer to the date I will ask for a firmer sense of numbers, especially for the museum outing (since we I will need to arrange tickets at, hopefully, a group rate). But for now, just please keep the date circled in your calendar.

it's like Kari always says, "it's not how well you start, it's how well you finish."

A-Rod was quite happy with the selection, as both were hand-picked by Ronaldo.
