Nearly 20 years ago Raider HC Mike Shanahan fired a good part of his coaching staff; one of which was offensive line coach Art Shell. Al Davis then stepped in and said "No, Shell stays." Shanahan was then fired 4 games into the season with cause and was never paid out the remainder of his contract. Art Shell then took over as HC and had a winning record as a coach and was questionably fired after a 9-7 1994 season...because he lost the wild card race to arch rival Kansas City?? That's the only reason I can think of. Shanahan later went on to become HC of the Denver Broncos leading them to 2 superbowl titles and has had the Raiders number ever since.
This passed offseason, Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin wanted to dismiss Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator, but Al Davis stepped in and said "No, he stays." Kiffin was then fired 4 games into the regular season with cause and Davis claims he won't pay out his contract. Offensive line coach Tom Cable has now taken over as interim HC and this almost looks like the Mike Shannahan story all over again. Does anybody think KC will fire Herman Edwards and pick up Kiffin? Does anybody think Tom Cable will produce a winning team?

Lets not go all crazy about what a swell coach "The Kitten" was. Did you see that 76-yard field goal attempt? Did you see the constant mismanagement of timeouts? Did you see the offensive game plan that had a severe lack of creativity? I'm not saying he will never be a good coach. But I am saying he's not that great of a coach right now. True, for the sake of stability and continuity, I would have liked to see him grow into the role. But enough with the "Mike Shanahan Jr" BS. He has a long - long - long way to go before he should be mentioned in the same sentence as the ShanaRat - unless its a sentence that states they were both fired 4 games into the season by Al Davis.
We didn't really look like we were going to be above .500 this season anyway, so no - Tom Cable will not produce a miracle and a winning team. But a 6-10 year can still be salvaged, and I believe Cable to be a much SMARTER coach than Kitten. KC won't pick up Kitten, because everyone knows he needs several more years of coaching, perhaps on the collegiate level, before he will be ready to take the reigns of an NFL team again.
It WAS a mistake to hire Kiffen in the first place. Cable is as good as any to finish out the season.
