Pat Tillman was a role model and a "hero."

Yeah, I know an obvious statement but with Pac-Man, Vick, Artest, Kobe, all these millionaire athlete's getting all bent out of shape about money, playing time, fame, winning, it bears repeating.

If you dont know who Pat Tillman is, you are a NEW sports fan so I will educate you.

He was a college teammate of QB Jake "The Snake" Plummer at  Arizona State and was drafted by a hapless orginaztion, the Arizona Cardinals in 1998. He turned down a lucrative contract from the St Louis Rams due to his loyalty to the Cardinals, something which is practically unheard of in today's society by pro athlete's.

In 2002, he enlisted with his brother in US Army. He became an Army Ranger and was deployed to the Middle East, spending time in Afghanistan and Iraq. On April 24, 2004, he was killed by US forces in so called "friendly fire." He was 27 years old.

It is currently being re-investigated.

Sure there is speculation about wether he was killed by a fellow Ranger but that is not why I am posting this, this is not about politics.

It takes an extremely selfless person to throw away fame and fortune as an NFL player to take a salary of around $30,000 to put your life on the line and defend your nation's freedom. Tillman was well liked by many and nobody was really all that surprised when they heard the news he was quitting a game to do something much more honorable.

This is someone I wish my son would look up to, not these wacked out players who complain about playing time, how much they make when they make millions playing a game.

I guess these athlete's have all forgotten about what it was like when they played **** Wee football and played for the love of the game.

So sad.

Damn straight, Tillman is a true American hero, a throwback athlete to those of the WWII and Korean War era who put their careers on hold for the country. It's especially, how shall I put this, honorable to do it today since the massive contracts, endorsements and such. RIP.

Tillman is an American hero, no doubt. Too bad there are not more role models.
