Week One against Western Kentucky went just about according to plan: Score a lot of points, play solid defense, get no one hurt. The biggest disappointment is that the backups were cut short on playing time due to the lightning stoppage. Other than that, not too much to complain about. Here are the post-game grades:
QB: Tim Tebow unleashed the arm he seldom used last year, completing 13 of 17 passes for 300 yards and 3 TDs. He also ran for a score while leading the Gators to TDs on their first four possessions. Cam Newton was effective in his limited appearance before the game was called. Grade: A
RB: Kestahn Moore had a solid effort, gaining 91 yards and scoring two TDs. Grade: B
WR: Riley Cooper had a standout game with 122 yards and 2 TDs, but several wideouts contributed in both the running and passing games. Grade: A
OL: Impressive performance, no sacks, very few penalties. Grade: A
DL: Derrick Harvey had two sacks, Jermaine Cunningham and Justin Trattou picked up one each. Grade: B
LB: Brandon Spikes led the way with 11 tackles, 7 solo. Grade: B
DB: Generally not tested, no standout plays, but no glaring mistakes either. Grade: C
Special Teams: Some issues with kick coverage, but the new kicker and punter both had good days. Grade: C
Coaching: Might have preferred if Tebow had been taken out one series sooner, to avoid the chippy play from WKU's defense in the second half. Overall game played out as if UF had scripted the results. Grade: B
