My beloved Faithful,
We started this season very hopeful after going 2-0 against division rivals, even though our abysmal offensive production was frustrating our top two offensive weapons, Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore. In game 3 it caught up to us, and we got clobbered by the Steelers. So now, going into week 4 with a home game against division rival Seattle, we fully expected to get back on the winning track and start to open up our offense. Instead, we took about 5 steps back against a Seattle team that was very beatable.
Where do I even start?! Offense as always. Frank Gore has been getting more and more verbal lately about his frustration with the offense not opening up how it can, and it appeared to translate to his play on the field with a very shaky performance. He wasnt running with the authority he typically does, and wasnt holding the ball. This is a problem with coaching. It is the coaches JOB to motivate his players and keep their minds in the right place, thats why they even have a job. Thats what seperates the Great coaches from others, their ability to get the most out of their players. Everyone knew he was frustrated to a boiling point, yet nobody can relate to him enough to make sure he is ready?!
Alex Smith looked horrendous as usual. His throws lack the strength and accuracy needed to lead this team. Our offensive line looked confused and unprepared as they gave up countless sacks, not to mention the other plays the QB got plastered on, one of which took young Alex Smith out of the game with an injured right shoulder, the extent of which we still do not know.
In comes the venerable Trent Dilfer aka "The Dil", who is a likeable guy and someone who probably wasnt given a fair shake during his days a starter, but has been riding pine for many moons now. He came in and threw a couple completions...to Seattle!!! ARRRGG!! not to mention that he got hit like a rag doll a couple of time during the game. The hated Ex niner Julian Peterson terrorized us throughout the game as well
Our stout defense was nowhere to be found as the allowed Seattle to make huge plays in the passing game and gave up enough on the ground to keep the ball away from our offense, which would give it right back in a turnover once they got on the field. I give the defense some benefit of the doubt due to the fact they were playing with their backs to the wall all game due the offense not even showing a spark.
The Special team was the only thing we can take some sort of happiness from. Michael Lewis blocked a punt which was huge and gave our team a chance, but we threw an INT as soon as we stepped on the field. After the half, we havent scored and we had to kick the ball, KUDOS to whomever decided to call the onside kick, which we subsequently recovered, only to give it right back, again, to the birds....
So, overall, a truly horrible performance by the team, but particularly the offense which looked like a debacle from the bottom to the top, and wouldnt allow our team the chance to get into the game and pull out a much needed divisional victory. NOW the seahawks are leading the division, and we look like we might have some much bigger problems on the horizon if we do not do something NOW to fundamentally change our offensive scheme.
