In response to:
A-Rod's price may be $400 million
It would not be out of the realm of possibility that Scott Boras could ask for about $40 million per year over 10 years for Alex Rodriguez. If that's the case, the Yankees will be out and Rodriguez will go to the open market, where the Red Sox could become a player. The Sox, however, likely would not pay that type of money, and if they don't it's likely nobody else would, either.

Four Hundred Million dollars for one player? Well considering that is more than the Gross Domestic Product of the African Nation of Sao Tome and Principe, I would have to say this is getting beyond ridiculous. Today's New York Daily News reports that the Yankees are prepared to offer an extension of up to 140 million for 5 years, I have to say that it is beyond insane for Scott Boras to turn around and ask for up to 40 million a year.

While, I believe in the idiom that a fool and his money are easily parted, I have to say that if there is a fool out there willing to give Alex Rodriguez Four Hundred Million dollars for 10 years, I would not only have to question his sanity, I would need to take his pulse and see if he is alive.

You got 2 blogs in like 15 minutes. Making up for lost time? But anyways, another good one.

October 28, 2007  10:08 PM ET

I agree completely. They are getting payed 400 million dollars to play a game? Good blog.

October 28, 2007  10:17 PM ET

If someone is going to pay it I don't think A-Rod should get ripped for it. He should give some to charity. I can't see anyone needing 400 million dollars plus what he already has. I never see people complain about musicians charging 300 dollars for a concert or actors (actresses) getting 40 million for one movie. Atheletes work harder then them so I am one of the few people that does not have a huge problem with it. The Bible says to tithe 10 percent I hope he remembers that.

October 28, 2007  10:23 PM ET

Well, I am not going to get into an argument over this but norcalsurfer who are you to assume that athletes work harder than musicians or actors and actresses? I mean it takes time to get into character for a movie, and it takes time to put together a creative process for your album.

Yes, A-Rod has put the time into his game but for his agent to ask for that much money is unreasonable. It's one thing to shoot for the moon, but Boras is shooting for Saturn.

And yes, A-Rod will be tithing a tenth of his future salary. It will be to the Church of Boras, Scott Boras that is.

Most athletes bodies are brutalized. The year round training and traveling takes a massive toll on the body. While I some actors have to bulk up for parts, travel to odd ball locations and need to tap a creative vein not many of us have. I know its work, and very hard work. Being a cop, we make super good money. We make six figures now and I think we earn it with what we do. Some of friends talk about how I am paid too much. We get new contracts every year with that comes more money. If the city I work for wants to their street cops $150,000 a year I don't complain. As long as someone is going to pay we don't really have right to complain. I still think pro athletes put their bodies through more than any other form of entertaiment.

October 28, 2007  11:17 PM ET

Wow, if you told cops in New York that you make 6 figures they would move to your town in a heart beat.

The starting salary for a New York City Police Department Officer is about 26,000 and it goes up to 32,000 after about 6 months.

Which in my mind is not enough money.

October 28, 2007  11:19 PM ET

People will pay you tons more than you are worth just as JD Drew. it will happen, not in NY since he just announced he will be a free agent, but it will happen.

October 28, 2007  11:19 PM ET

rucking fidiculous... i think that they should just blackball him so that he can't make any more money, unless he donates every LAST CENT to a charity... there's a solution... then he'd have a reason to play; people's lives would be at stake...

Boras can ask for whatever he likes, he's not getting $40mil/yr. He'll get $30mil, though. Is he worth it? You betcha. He'll bring in much more than that to whatever team signs him, which is the bottom line in any business deal. Michael Eisner got $100mil/yr to take over Disney. Was he worth it? Absolutely. He increased their bottom line by $1.5bil.

The average fan can't comprehend a baseball player making that kind of money to play a game, but he's not getting it to play a game. He's getting it to make money for a business.

If you can hire one manager for $40k/yr who will add $100k to your bottom line -or- you can hire a different manager for $80k/yr who will add $500k to your bottom line, which one do you hire? Same thing here, just on a much larger scale.

October 28, 2007  11:38 PM ET

I said earlier I was on board at $30M, but this has gone over the top. Rodriguez will make almost $28M this year, so he certainly wasn't going to settle for anything less. But if he wants $40M, let him go. I don't think anyone else is going to pay it either. Then what? Or could this be his way of getting out of New York?

October 28, 2007  11:42 PM ET

"Or could this be his way of getting out of New York?"

DING-DING-DING....we have a winner.

He knows he's not going to get a pay cut going somewhere else and the NY tabloids and fans crucify the guy. Why would he want to stay?

October 28, 2007  11:43 PM ET

Yes I am blessed California takes care of it cops.

October 28, 2007  11:51 PM ET

Man. What a way for ARod to show up both the Yankees AND the Red Sox. Make the announcement during game 4 of the World Series and 1 day before the Yankees are expected to announce their next manager.

I can't stand Boras, but the man is a genius.

I was just listening to 660AM and they were talking about this subject matter. What they were saying is that enough will be enough when fans determine it is. Enough will be enogh when we stop paying for tickets, specific sports channels, merchandise, etc., etc... Boomer pointed out that in ticket sales alone (considering the stadiums sell out) many teams cover their payroll. Everything else is gravy! I don't think any player is worth that kind of money or any person for that matter (at least not their abilites or talents) but I obviously have very little to do withthat. The only time I go to a game is when I'm given tickets. Let's all keep in mind that yes, it is a sport but it's also a "game."

October 29, 2007  11:18 AM ET

I hard the same thing The Big Cat, and they are right. It's up to us to say enough. I haven't been able to afford seats at Shea or M.S.G. in ages. The last games I have been able to see have been St. John's games at the Garden (because one I am an alumnus and two because they are affordable).

As far as A-Rod goes, it's a safe bet to say that he opted out because Boras found an owner willing to pay more than what the Yankees will.

October 29, 2007  01:07 PM ET

Seems Boras has come down a bit since I last heard from him in ESPN at the end of Yandees season.
Boras half jokingly stated his next asking price for Pay-Rod was going to be in the area of $500mil. over 10 yrs or a lifetime contract for $1BIL. What a greedy little Troll

October 29, 2007  01:47 PM ET

Wouldn't it be funny if an athlete actually got a billion dollars? If I was someone important, like the President of the United States I would be P'd off at that.

October 29, 2007  03:39 PM ET

October 29, 2007  03:39 PM ET
