Better is a substantive, which means an adjective standing in for a noun, like say, "the Best and the Brightest". In this case it was standing in for "pitchers". Substantives are pretty common in Homer, not Simpson, but the dead Greek dude, e.g., "hoi aristoi" or " ho kakioteros" ( not that we hillbillies / ****hicks from Ohio would have ever read him). The last I heard they're still around, though used less frequently. I think we're talking a sentence here. Anyhow, when you're calling people hillbillies and **** hicks, you'll catch no slack for your spelling. BTW, 17-8.
