I love the American League because they have the big sluggers, the players that can smash and light up pitchers like a Christmas tree, but this is the playoffs and everyone knows that good pitching and stellar defense wins out in October.

A's vs. Twins

The Twins have been on a roll for months now and the A's have the best record in baseball since the break. Two steam engines on a collision course which should make for one heck of an October fireworks display in the first round. The Twins have all the right ingredients for success, hot and timely hitting, the best pitcher in Johan Santana and a home field advantage with baseball's best record while playing at home. The A's are easy to overlook as they haven't received much attention of late in the press since their division rivals fell off the playoff picture early and for some reason those guys that play in the West get less coverage from the big east coast press outlets. My mind is telling me to take the Twins but my heart is saying to go with the A's and I usually follow my heart so I am going that way today. I'm taking the A's in five with defense and pitching as the reasons why.

 Tigers vs. Yankees

The Ligers, as I've taken to calling them, are on a slide and have stumbled and bumbled into the post season having blown their season-long division lead on the final day of the regular season. The Yankees are co-owners of the best record in baseball (along with the cross-town rival Mets) and have sport the best lineup since the 1927 Yankees. I should say that I am a Yankees fan, but c'mon, their lineup is sick from one thru nine. The Yanks bullpen may be suspect but they have the best closer in postseason history in Mo Rivera and that goes a long way. Put Rivera on the Braves in the 90's and I think we may have seen a different team dynasty. Obviously I'm taking the Yankees here. The Yanks owned the Ligers in the regular season and I see that trend continuing in this series.

The best part of the season starts tomorrow. Play ball!!!
