I have an interesting idea that may solve our BCS bowl problems. I think the top 25 teams should play in a single tournament with the nationally ranked number one team (by the coaches and the BCS) receiving a first round bye. The first level rounds would pit the top 24 teams against each other with these bowls being the lower tier bowls such as the Holiday Bowl, the Armed Forces Bowl, or the New Mexico Bowl. Matching up higher ranked teams versus mid or lower level teams would generate the highest interest because the lower ranked teams would have no choice but to prove that they belong in the rankings by beating the higher ranked and possibly, as some fans would say, overrated teams; but we all know that any team could lose on any given Saturday. Games would begin after conference championships like they do now so there would be 24 teams playing over the course of 5 weeks. The next round of teams would be down to 12 with these being the next higher prestigious bowls. Next round would be down to six then three. The top team of that final 3 would have to have a bye for the week leading up to the Championship Series to play out evenly. Just like today the Fiesta Bowl, The Sugar Bowl, and The Rose Bowl, and The Orange Bowl rotate for the national title game for those final four games (the last three teams left and the best matchup out of the 6 from lat round). The winner of the two matched teams in any bowl would split the money with the loser getting the most so that way the losing team does not become richer by winning the other games. The split should be 70-30 or 80-20 or maybe 90-10 for the BCS games. That way everything is solved, the bowl games are still played and maintain their prestige, the money is still there, every team gets a chance to play for the BCS, no more Hawaiis or Auburns or Georgias getting left out on the cold, every fan of the Top 25 will see their teams compete, they satisfy the bowl and BCS rankings, there could be a BCS selection show just like the NCAA March Madness top 64 teams so the show will garner attention to the BCS itself, and if you really want to make things interesting; include the number one team from Divsion 2 like Appalachian State that way all can play for it, but then, we are getting into a much more complex realm. No more one game miracles or teams getting the cold shoulder because of the lack of the strength of schedule or not winning their conference championship; and it would be good for football for all teams to get good television air time. Everyone has been screaming for a playoff and I think it is about time that college football join the bandwagon. Sure, playing 4 or 5 extra games may be harder on the athletes, but the Divsion II schools prove year in and year out that it can be done. It would also almost be like running them through a test to see if they can stand the the rigors of a 17 week NFL season and match them up against the best teams in the country. It would also give everyone a chance to prove that they can, in fact, play at the next level and it would also gives the pro scouts more games by which to evaluate them on instead of the knock on one player that "he has never faced a team with the speed of the SEC or Big 12." If a team is left standing after all of this then they should be legitimate national champs with no more irritating "what if" shows just one team that can outlast them all. I believe that this idea will work because it satisfies all of the problems that the other propositions could not fulfill. Thanks!!
