The Pats Pulled It Off

I have just witnessed NFL history. The Patriots have gone undefeated in the regular season.

Okay, first things first. Congratulations, guys. Despite my dislike for some of the guys on your team, despite my team loyalties, you have played incredible football this year. We fans can only imagine how hard you have worked, what you have sacrificed, and what you must be feeling at this moment. I'd be willing to bet that you brought a ton of new fans into the NFL fold, and re-energized some veteran fans. It was always fun watching you play. Enjoy your moment--you have earned it.

Now, on to my biting commentary.

Bill Belichick is STILL acting like holding a press conference is only slightly less annoying than being used as a chew toy for a rabid poodle. Man--you just coached a team to a perfect season!! Show us some genuine emotion! Belichick wouldn't even mention "perfect season" or "perfect record". He would only say "what happened here tonight". Listen, Bill, can I give you some advice?

Tough...I'm giving it anyway.

Humility is a great characteristic. But you are human, right Bill? The level of humility that you seem to have is not natural. As such, your 'humility' is totally disingenuous. You are either up there at the podium, lying your sweatshirt-clad rear end off, or your really do lack any amount of normal human emotion. Neither scenario is very appealing. For someone who seems to be a football-savant, you are way off the mark on this one.

Another little piece of history took place this week. The NFL decided to simulcast this game on CBS, NBC, and the NFL Network. I heard a lot of people say that this was a generous act by the NFL to ensure that any fan who wanted to could watch the game.

If you believe that for one second, I have some great coastal property here in Chicago that I'd like to sell you.

Are you kidding me? This was NOT a charitable move by the NFL. This was a marketing guy's wet dream! The NFL could not have scripted a better scenario to promote their network. This was a potentially historical game, and by simulcasting the game on network TV, the NFL was spoon-feeding three hours of advertising for the NFL Network to America. And they certainly were not shy about that promotion, either. If I had to hear Rich Eisen say "For those of you that don't have the NFL Network, this is just a sampling of the quality programming that we air 365 days a year," one more time, I was going to call and cancel my subscription on principle. UGH. I hate shameless self-promotion. It just feels so...dirty.

Back to the game itself, I was so proud of the Giants. I know that sounds weird, but I can't think of a more fitting adjective to describe how I am feeling. The Giants did not roll over and give the win to the Pats--they fought like hell for the entire 60 minutes. They played excellent football, and I was impressed with Eli Manning. I'm not sure why they didn't play like that for the rest of the season, but they had a great game tonight.

I know that I have been critical of the Pats. I'll admit...they are not my favorite franchise. They still aren't. But I just wanted to take a few minutes to comment on being a witness to history. Kudos, gentlemen...congrats, mazel tov, and thanks.

Thanks for giving us football fans a season to remember.

I watched the game picture-in-picture along with the Alamo Bowl. It was a great game by both teams...really thought the Giants might pull it off for a sec there.

I think it would be in order for you to do a little research before you decide what the truth is. The truth is that cable companies all over the U.S. fought with the NFL over who was carrying what. If the NFL network caved to anyone, it was to the cable companies. You can look it up. I did.

Thanks.

They will be like Bonds....

an asterik besides this 16-0 season, they should be 15-1 after Goodell found his stones and made them forfeit the Jets game....

However they wont be compared to the Dolphins championship team because they arent getting to the SB....

Philly, NY Giants and Ravens wont be in the AFC playoffs.....Jacksonville, Indy and SD will be....With the Jags and Colts having the type of team to beat them, especially the Jags who can play smash mouth football and play defense with a QB who doesnt make mistakes

Perfection doesnt involve "cheating".....

FACT.....

DJ - you need to let go of the cheating thing and get some therapy if needed. I get so tired of hearing this crap. The Patriots were caught breaking a RULE that the Jets and 3 teams did the prev season - including the Patriots. The Pats were busted ONLY because they had the (stupidity, genius, arrogance - insert your favorite conspiracy theory here). The NFL was watching THIS game because of taping incidents between these same two teams last year. They gained absolutely NO advanatage during that game. None. At all. So GET OVER IT !

Kari, Bill wears dockers or chino's on his rear end.. his torso is sweatshirt clad.

Here in NE, the game was on NFL Network, ABC, NBC, and CBS. The only major network NOT to carry it here was FOX. I agree. This was a marketing person's dream come true. Regardless of the reason Goodell says he decided to simulcast it, the entire night showcased the NFL Network and their www.iwantnflnetwork.com website.

Oh and on behalf of the Patriots, I accept your congratulations and say in the voice of Elvis
Thank you, Thank you very much

dj, enough already, although many have or still do feel that way, it's time to let it go...what they did is amazing...

not only did they go undefeated, they were the most prolific offense to do so, and i would like to see anyother TOP offense like the patriots, with a top 5 defense too......

they deserve everything they get, and they do deserve to go down at home versus PEYTON and Co.

Kp,

In the voice of Foghorn Leghorn, I say...
"You're, you're, I say, you're welcome."

Glad to see you back. :-)

Oh, and thanks for the correction regarding Bill's attire. I think that "chinos-clad rear end" works. I'll keep it mind for future blogs.

Forest...in the interest of a good debate, and to evaluate my writing skills, I'm curious why you thought I felt the NFL Network caved to anybody. If anything, I think that the NFL flipped a big bird to the cable companies.

The NFL took the cable companies to court to force them to keep the NFL Network in their basic tier of channels--meaning that subscribers would not have to pay more for the network. This would put NFL Network in far more homes across the country. The NFL lost that battle. Right now, the two biggest cable providers, Comcast and Time Warner, have the NFL Network on a "Sports Entertainment Tier" and customers must pay an extra $6.99 a month to access. So by simulcasting the game on free network TV, the NFL, how are they knuckling under to the cable companies?

I don't agree with the cheating stuff, every team in the NFL tries to get ahead so whatever.

BUT, I also don't think that they have accomplished anything yet. Plenty of teams have won 16 games in a season, it is the 17 18 and 19th that they need to get before I'll say that they are anything beyond the #1 seed in the AFC.

DJ- When will you Patriot haters, got punished, and payed their penalties..ALL that did was make the Pats mad, and all the other teams paid the price.!!!! I would bet my life that most teams have done this taping thing in one way or another. If your team doesn't have as good as a coach as Bill complain about your team-just leave ours alone...
Now I know, we are all allowed our own opinions but this is like a broken record-quit dwelling on it. Or is it the only bad thing you can think to say about them!!!!!

Nice blog, Kari! I agree. History was made last night, but I can't think of a more unlikeable coach in my years of watching the NFL. But it's easy to hate dynasty teams, especially in an age when dynasties are not supposed to exist.

Congrats to the players, coaches, and nameless personnel who helped make this happen . But, what has really happened? How will we talk about this team if they go "one and done" in the playoffs?

I think that's why Belicheck was so, um, unlikeable during the press conference. He wants his team to finish the playoffs undefeated, and until they do that, he's not going to talk about NFL history or perfect seasons.

Didn't know if that was your picture or your boyfriends...TSK Lighten up or just stay on your MAN blogs!!! We women don't like to fight!!!!

When the Pats won I was mad. But then I realized how sweet it would be if they were to lose in the playoffs. Much better than a meaningless game 16. That's all I have to cling to now.

Report Offensive Comment

Why would you be mad to watch history being made!!! No other team has gone undefeated for 16 regular season games..
Who do you root for!!!

Congrats Pats and fans (except the one that left me a comment on my profile page). Nothing worse than a sore loser except a sore winner.

Pats deserve all the accolades that come with 16-0. However, if they dont win the Superbowl, even they will tell you it was all for nothing.

Great work Kari!
