The Patriots do a great job of stocking depth and making their players interchangeable. Just look at the moves they made this year to stock up for the draft.
The Colts do a great job as well getting Anthony Gonzalez AND Tony Ugoh this year who have stepped in immediately and have been huge contributors.
Finally, the biggest thing the Patriots have going for them is their prestige. Their winning ways have enabled them to attract premier free agents whom will even to a cut in play to play for a winner. For example, Donte Stallworth, Kelly Washington, Addalius Thomas, etc. They know when to get rid of players that will break the bank such as Adam Vinateri, Deion Branch, David Patten, or the aging Drew Bledsoe, Corey Dillion.
Also they know when to get players such as Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Al Davis and Nick Saban should be in NFL jail.

In the age of the salary cap and having players come and go, Scott Pioli, Robert Kraft & Coach Belichick all seem to have a sixth sense about talent evaluation, etc.
