Could somebody please attempt to explain to me how Oregon managed to win the Sun Bowl?

By thehemogoblin

Oregon, sans quarterback and all-time manly man (for torching Arizona's defense for a 40+ yard touchdown run on a blown ACL) Dennis Dixon, somehow took down the University of South Florida yesterday down in the west Texas town of El Paso, Pac-10 run-up-the-score style, 56-21. Now, if Oregon was full strength, that score could be expected, but with no Dixon, Jeremiah Johnson, Cameron Colvin, Brian Paysinger et al, this shouldn't have been a contest.

Starting the third-string quarterback is never a good sign, especially in a bowl game. Somehow, the Ducks managed to escape whilst doing so. Against the defense that had the one player in the nation who had more tackles for loss than any other player.

I, as a U of O fan (and hopefully, soon to be student, got's everything in line for that) was too scared to watch that game (I was busy making Yale win the Rose Bowl on my Xbox), assuming it to be a massacre, but something says that Oregon just crammed the ball down the middle of the USF defense 30 times with Stewart, crossed their fingers, and prayed for the best. Remind me never to watch another Oregon game ever (and hey, if it protects my eyes from "Lightning Yellow", it's fine by me; God, those uniforms are ugly).

Big East should go div II

They all out killed the opposing team, what is the problem?

I was busy making Appalachian State win the Final Four on my PS2, WITHOUT CHEATING!!!

Two words:Jonathan Stewart

South Florida was overrated all year getting a lot of their wins in the Big East-lite schedule. Oregon is crazy athletic even without the stud QB so I was not suprised at all.

You should go to UW, not Oregon. UW is a great school. GO DAWGS!

January 1, 2008  01:17 PM ET

NorCal is right. UDub is a great school, but Seattle? ick.

I watched the Oregon game. USF looked awful. But the Ducks' impressive performance bodes well for its future, even without DD.

I didn't cheat either. I just replaced the BCS conferences and the MAC with Football Championship Subdivision members.

cough* USF beat the snot out of the almighty SEC Auburn* Cough

Can't be that weak unless the SEC is....ooooh I just opened a can of worms.

well, florida lost to michigan. oso, you're right. the best conference is the southern conference (that wasn't a mistype)...

January 1, 2008  06:10 PM ET

What southern conference?

You mean the SEC? That's dubious. Despite LSU playing for the NC. But I won't profess to know enough about NCAA FB to make anything beyond casual observations. But I do call them as I see 'em.

January 1, 2008  06:11 PM ET

So if Florida lost to Michican and Michigan lost to App. State does that make Div 1AA better than the SEC? ;)

Man am I in an onery mood.

January 1, 2008  06:40 PM ET

The Ducks coaching staff probably spent all week preaching to the players about "playing within" themselves and "keeping it simple" Sounds like it worked, it was a smple **** KICKIN'. QUACKY STYLE. Big East did look a little thread-bare this year, PAC 10 and SEC are the powerhouses, with a few other teams thrown in the mix obviously.

January 1, 2008  08:56 PM ET

exactly what i said oso... the SoCon is where App State plays... oh, and don't forget florida beat kentucky who beat LSU who will beat Ohio State...

I don't know. I didn't watch any bowl games this year. I'd guess it was due to the quality of the opposition (see some of my throwdowns for the lowdowns on that, haha) and the ability to use three or four weeks of down time to prepare for a bowl game instead of studying for finals...
