Paul Pabst reenacting the Headless Horseman.
|
Dan Patrick Show producer Paul Pabst takes a unique look at the best and worst from the weekend every Monday ...
1. Great way to start the weekend. Got flowers for the wife and then took her to dinner on Friday night. This gives me the sports hall pass for the rest of the weekend. Trust me, you have to lay groundwork on Friday if you want to watch 14 hours of sports on Saturday.
2. The end of the Bears-Falcons game. Kyle Orton throws an impressive TD pass to seemingly win the game with 11 seconds left. My buddy Dane and I (both Bears fans) high-five and start talking about the playoffs before the game was over. Add in that I texted "ORTON!" to DP right before the final kickoff. I was guilty of premature celebration. I should have thought about algebra to keep that from happening.
3. Tony Stewart hipped me to this one. Keep some "perceived" bad beer on your fridge and nobody will take it. I had a case of Schlitz chilling in the fridge on Friday. Friends stopped by during the weekend and took some of the "high end" beer ... Harpoon -- Hoegaarden ... etc.
4. The Sox-Rays game on Saturday night. Yeah, I was up well past 1 a.m. (and not at a bar) watching this back-and-forth game. Isn’t it great though, when you invest the hours into a game like this and you get the payoff of a good ending?
5. DirecTV carried me through Sunday with all the great endings to the early games. I was switching channels so fast, I may have pulled a muscle in my 'remote hand.' Speaking of DTV ... check this out -- www.displacedfansearch.com. They have these sweet new team-specific remotes. So with my Bears remote I’m not pressing "48" ... I’m pressing "Steve Fuller-Vince Evans."
6. A perfect Saturday in New England. Driving a Volvo to a Jones Farm in Shelton, Conn., to pick out a few pumpkins for the house. All I needed was a sweater tied around my neck and a yellow lab ... I’m a bit disgusted with myself for how preppy that is. The bonus, bringing home fresh apple cider and oatmeal raisin cookies in time to watch Oklahoma-Texas. Rack me, I’m out. |

The Cardinals beat Dallas 30-24 in OT on Sunday.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt explained the crazy ending of the Cowboys game on Sunday to Dan.
The Cowboys were running out of time and hit a long pass downfield. They rushed down the field to down the ball and stop the clock, but an Arizona defender, Travis LaBoy, was stuck behind the line after he hurt himself. So the Cowboys got a five-yard off-sides penalty which made their final-second field-goal attempt easier.
Then right before the Cowboys attempted the field goal, Whisenhunt called time out. Nick Folk's first attempt was blocked. He nailed the second attempt after the time out.
But Whisenhunt's Cardinals didn't panic. They lost the coin toss, but their defense held tough. Then things worked out well on the punt. Apparently, Sean Morey had been un-blocked earlier in the game. Whisenhunt said Morey was directed to go after the punt if the Cowboys didn't pick him up. The 'Boys didn't block Morey, he blocked the punt and the Cardinals picked it up for the win.
Whisenhunt was happy with most aspects of Arizona's game on Sunday, despite some major mistakes. He said he felt coming in they had some confidence at home and could hang with the Cowboys.
The key was that the Cardinals could get pressure rushing four guys. Whisenhunt said the D's No. 1 priority was stop the run. Once they did that, the Cardinals were in good shape against Tony Romo and those talented receivers.
Dan asked Whisenhunt if the Cardinals expect to make the playoffs. Whisenhunt said "yes, we do expect to make the playoffs."
Whisenhunt had interesting things to say about Kurt Warner. Whisenhunt said that Warner texted him 15 times or so the Monday after Anquan Boldin got hurt against the Jets. Whisenhunt understood Warner's emotions. The coach didn't seem worried he was going to lose Warner. |

Tony Romo had a rough time against the Cardinals.

According to an ESPN report, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is out four weeks with a broken pinkie.
Romo was hit hard and often in the 30-24 overtime loss to the Cardinals on Sunday, so it's not a surprise he got banged up.
The back-up is Brad Johnson, who struggled in preseason, and Brooks Bollinger is listed as No. 3.
Johnson is a 17-year veteran, so maybe they'll be OK.
Paulie points out the Cowboys have Tampa Bay, New York Giants and Washington coming up. |

Shane Victorino was upset the Dodgers threw at him.

Bob Costas is OK with brush-back pitches and hitting a guy down low. But he has a big problem with pitchers going up high. He agrees with the Phillies' Shane Victorino -- don't throw at someone's head.
Costas also weighed in on the Rays-Red Sox series. He says he's concerned about how long the games are because some of the pitchers are slow. Bob says there's no bigger baseball fan than him and he could barely stay up.
Costas also revisited the "chair" incident at Football Night in America. That's not why Keith Olbermann wasn't there last night. K.O. reportedly had strep throat. Costas did reiterate that while the incident seemed innocent, he was up on a pedestal and could have been seriously hurt.
Costas also weighed in on the poll question -- who is the No. 2 team in the NFL? Costas couldn't pick one. He said week to week things are too crazy in the NFL. |

Reggie Miller called the outdoors game at Indian Wells Tennis Center between the Suns and Nuggets. Reggie said it was unseasonably cold. The players were feeling it -- they were 2-for-24 from 3-point range. And Charles Barkley and he were freezing.
Reggie said both the Suns and Nuggets are trying to re-define themselves. They both have to get tougher to win the Western Conference.
As usual, Reggie weighed in on a number of topics.
1. Reggie is proud of his hometown Dodgers for throwing at the Phillies. He's psyched they showed their toughness despite being down 0-2 in the series. (Reggie is actually an Angels fan)
2. Reggie talked about teams fighting. Reggie was at that Pacers-Pistons melee in Detroit. Miller said it can get ugly really fast and these fights can have serious ramifications.
3. Reggie has the Celtics in his next game for TNT. Dan is giving him a hard time for turning down Boston and having a shot at a ring. |

Tony Romo's fumbles may have cost Dallas a win Sunday.

SI.com's Peter King has serious concerns about the Cowboys. He says Wade Phillips hasn't instilled a sense of urgency in his team. King won't call him Barry Switzer, but he's headed in that direction.
King said several players in the locker room are concerned about the attitude. Expectations might have caused problems.
King was also concerned about Tony Romo's propensity to fumble. King says the Dallas QB has to go to the Tiki Barber school of learning to hold on to the ball.
King had interesting comments on the Cowboys' Adam Jones. Apparently, Jones has four bodyguards. And he still got in trouble. It will be interesting to see what the NFL does about Jones.
Some more nuggets from King:
1. Dan asked King who the No. 2 team in the NFL is (Giants are No. 1). King said the Titans, because of the defense. King was, however, a little worried that the Titans may not be able to last 16 games playing this physically.
2. King doesn't think Reggie Bush is much faster than the guys chasing him. That's the difference between Bush and Gale Sayers. Bush does some things very well, but he's not quite what the Saints wanted him to be when they drafted him. King talked to Bush and said the Saints RB is more accepting that he's not going to be an every-down star.
3. King said he knew Matt Ryan was different from the first time he met him. Ryan showed up at an interview wearing a suit when King thought he could have been wearing sweats. King said Ryan told him that he studied Tom Brady and Peyton Manning press conferences and wants to be like those guys with the media. In some ways, Ryan has exceeded Peyton Manning's rookie season.

Matt Cassel's Patriots are 4-1.
AP

Dan asked the Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy which is a bigger concern: Red Sox or Patriots. Shaughnessy said the Pats have bigger problems.
Shaughnessy thinks the soft schedule and somewhat questionable divisioin will hold them up.
Shaughnessy wasn't surprised the Chargers were so fired up against New England last night. San Diego had a lot of built-up anger toward the Patriots. The Chargers beat them up 30-10.
But still, Shaughnessy thinks that the Patriots will sneak into the playoffs with at least 10 wins.
Shaughnessy seems to think the Red Sox will be OK, despite the problems Josh Beckett is having.

Happy Columbus Day. Hopefully you're listening to the show from home and not stuck at work.
What a great weekend of sports. Dan will break down all the action in MLB, NFL and college football. Here's a quick rundown of the guests we have so far:
SI's Peter King: King will weigh in on all the crazy finished in the NFL this weekend. Are the Cowboys in trouble after that overtime loss to the Cardinals? Tony Romo got hit way too often on Sunday.
NBC's Bob Costas: The Football Night in America host talks shop with Dan. Find out what really goes down at 30 Rock on Sundays. Also, Costas will likely weigh in the MLB playoffs.
Reggie Miller: If you haven't heard Reggie the last few weeks, you might not know he's a Raiders fan. Expect him to be depressed -- well, Reggie depressed. He never seems to get too down.

Great weekend in sports. Here are some of the big stories we'll definitely hit on Monday:
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
-- Texas beats Oklahoma. The Longhorns jumped over Alabama to be No. 1. Who would have thought Texas would be the favorite at this point? The Longhorns' jump from No. 5 to No. 1 is the biggest leap to one since 1988.
-- Toledo beat Michigan.
-- Oklahoma State knocked off Missouri.
-- Vandy lost to Mississippi State.
-- Texas Tech, BYU and Utah still undefeated.
-- Notre Dame fell to North Carolina. The game was a mess at the end, thanks to some iffy calls by the refs. The Irish came close to pulling it off but ran out of time on their final drive.
-- How about those No. 3 Nittany Lions pounding Wisconsin? That'll teach everyone who counted JoePa out.
-- Looks like LSU didn't get to Tim Tebow too often. Gators killed 'em.
NFL
-- If you didn't see the end of the Cardinals-Cowboys game, make sure you try to catch the highlight. Marion Barber' touchdown with two minutes left had to be the worst tackling I've ever seen, giving Dallas a shot it never should have had. Then the Cards prevailed in OT thanks to a blocked punt.
-- What happened to the Redskins? Giants will have a chance to move into a commanding lead in the NFC East after Washington fell to St. Louis and Dallas lost.
-- Sick finishes in Houston, Minnesota and Atlanta. Games aren't over 'til they're over. Shame about the Dolphins. For a minute, it seemed like they were going to wildcat their way to the playoffs.
MLB
-- Phillies jumped out to 2-0 lead with wins in Philly. As of right now, things aren't looking good for Philly in Game 3
-- The Rays won a dramatic one on Saturday night to even the series at 1-1. Who is the favorite in this series right now? |
