The Jolly Red Giant

Rutgers University has announced that its first three football games during the 2008 season will be televised. The Scarlet Knights open up at home on Sept. 1 against Fresno State (ESPN 4:00 PM). They play again at home against North Carolina on Sept. 11 (ESPN 7:30 PM). Finally, RU goes on the road to play Navy in Annapolis on Sept. 20 (CBS 3:30).

Being a good program in the New York area has its benefits, especially from a broadcast standpoint. Maybe Ray Perkins had it right when he once referred to RU as a "sleeping giant."

Rutgers Helps With NJ Special Olympics

Teams around the country participate in similar activities. Unfortunately, we rarely hear about it.

Members of the Rutgers football program helped with the opening ceremonies at the opening of this year's NJ Special Olympics held in Trenton. Coach Greg Schiano was called upon in his role to help inspire and motivate the more than 16,000 Special Olympians across the state and to represent the many coaches who devote countless hours helping others.

Rutgers Lands Prized Recruit

Desmond Scott of Durham, N.C., rated the No. 2 all-purpose running back in the country by Rivals.com, verbally committed to Rutgers today as reported on http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2008/06/rutgers_lands_coveted_rb_recru.html

Scott, a 5-9, 185-pound back at Hillside High School, is considered a Ray Rice-type back, according to Rivals.com recruiting expert Mike Farrell.

"He's not quite as squat as Ray was, but he is probably a better pass receiver at this stage of his career than Ray was," Farrell said last week. "He's strong and runs low to the ground the way Ray did. He saw what a good fit Rice was at Rutgers."

YEAH! WHO DOESN'T LIKE THEM KNIGHTS?
Just a thank you to all who've helped me to grow our group. When I took over as administrator, we had 23 members. That number has grown by 5 over the past month. Not bad for a specific team's group. Thanks and stay active. Let's keep it rolling.
