Hello, Fresno State, North Carolina, TCU and Utah. Goodbye,  Arizona State, Cal, UCLA and Tennessee.

In his latest Power Rankings, SI.com's Stewart Mandel added Fresno State to the Top 25, even though the Bulldogs lost last week. He dropped Tennessee, even though the Volunteers won. And for the first time ever, he has three ranked teams from the Mountain West (BYU, Utah and TCU), more than either the Pac-10 (two) or Big East (one).

Any arguments?

UCLA gets beat by 50 and Purdue loses in OT to, what is most likely a better team, and you have UCLA ranked ahead of Purdue? That is non-sensical.

September 16, 2008  03:54 PM ET

UCLA is beaten by 50 and Purdue falls in OT to a ranked BCS team and UCLA is ranked ahead of Purdue? What gives? I'm not a Purdue fan nor do I care much about UCLA but this seems like someone didn't even think about the teams once they got past the top 25.

September 16, 2008  03:57 PM ET

Well...this may be the third time this is posted...don't know because nothing is displaying properly...but...UCLA ranked ahead of Purdue after UCLA lost by 50 and Purdue fell to a ranked team in OT is a joke.

Who's going to argue? The scoreboard speak for themselves. MWC = 5, Pac-10 = 0. Second or third best Pac-10 team (ASU) loses at HOME to the perenial MWC cellar dwellar (UNLV). BYU absolutely obliterates UCLA 59-0 - at anyone who watched the game knows that it wasn't even that close. BYU called off the dogs midway through the third, and didn't score a point in the fourth. They could have put up 80 against the Bruins (who will most likely finish around 4 or 5 in the pac 10). Think that USC will beat UCLA by 59 this year? Me either. Get used to this. The MWC is for real, and three years (or sooner) from now, will have an automatic BCS bid.

BYU absolutely obliterates UCLA 59-0...and anyone who watched the game knows that the game wasn't that close. BYU called the dogs off half way through the 3rd. They could have scored 80+ last saturday. You think that anybody (USC, Oklahoma, Florida, etc) would want to visit Provo right about now? I don't think so. Get used to these kinds of results. The MWC is for real. There are 3 or 4 teams that would win the Big (l)east or the ACC, and would challenge for the Big ten, Big 12, Pac-10, or even the SEC. No pushovers. MWC will have an automatic BCS bid in 3 years or less.

Before the end of the season you will give some love to the Ball State Cardinals. Check out the stats on their QB and WR. Get to know your minor counferences.

If you are one who cares about numbers, here are a few for you.

Stats on Oklahoma opponents so far this season:
Overall record: 2-6
Average pts. scored per game: 16.5
Average pts. allowed per game: 42!!

States on Georgia opponents so far this season:
Overall record: 5-4 (it's actually a winning one!!)
Average pts. scored per game: 25
Average pts. allowed per game: 25

This clearly shows that Oklahoma has distinguished itself as the number 2 team in the land! (please note the sarcasm...)
And for all of you out there who are reading ESPN, where they are talking about how Oklahoma is better than all the SEC teams, because they have "stood out" from the crowd, I ask, "WHO HAVE THEY PLAYED?" I am not saying that Georgia will be the number 2 team in the nation, all I am asking is that voters WAIT to see if Georgia will lose, and not drop them in the polls because of some PREDICTION that they will lose! It's only fair, and based on precedent of previous years.

Sorry for the double post. Something loaded wrong in my browser!

September 16, 2008  05:05 PM ET

Glad to see you put Ohio State lower than your colleagues. That said, how is it that a team that barely beats a middling MAC team and gets completely thumped by a good PAC 10 team is even still in the top 25?

September 16, 2008  05:06 PM ET

Hmmm... So ECU jumps UP two spots after a close call with Tulane? This is certainly a consistent beauty contest.

Stewart, this is a big step for you. You often view the MWC has another BCS wannabe but they're legit. 3 road victories vs. the Pac-10 and 2 home drubbings. Without Utah getting involved.

The MWC is a stronger conference than anyone gives them credit for. Not sure why everyone blows them off so easily from BCS consideration. They currently have 6 teams undefeated in non-conference play. This is a big year for them and on the field they are the 4th best conference. Any other given year and they are consistently in the top 6.

Look at this way, since '04/'05 the MWC (1-0) has as many BCS bowl victories as the ACC (1-9) and boasts highest bowl winning % of any other conference. Compare last year's 4-1 to the ACC 2-6.

Thank you for giving props to the Mountain West Conference, it's about time SI Writers say something positive. It's so rare to see this happen, most writers outright ignore non-BCS conferences.

Stewart, you've just won a lot of respect from a lot of people in the West.

September 16, 2008  05:22 PM ET

Thank you for finally being an SI writer who gives props to the Mountain West Conference. It's so rare to see someone from SI actually recognized that there are other conferences other than BCS-conferences and that they actually have teams that can compete.

Our games may not get prime coverage on the national level, but thanks for at least recognizing us.

You've just won a lot of respect from a lot of people in the West.

What I love about polls is that teams with a reputation always get special treatment.

Ohio State bumbles their way past Ohio and it is dismissed because they were lucky enough to win. Maryland loses to Middle Tennessee State (who then nearly beats Kentucky) and because they beat Cal the next week suddenly the Bears are frauds.

Cal is 2-1. They beat Michigan State who boasts a Heisman candidate (according to SI) who they held to 3.0 yards per carry. They lost to a team with 31 seniors coming off a bowl game season, on the road, in crappy weather (for them) and a weird start time.

Ohio State is 2-1. They have beaten no one and lost 35-3 to a team who last year beat Cal a whopping 24-17.

But, you know. Cal is Cal and Ohio State is Ohio State right? Neither should be ranked is the point.

September 16, 2008  05:30 PM ET

Forgive me if this is a duplicate, I hadn't signed in yet not sure it made it.

I'm tired of reputation playing into these rankings.

Cal has beaten Michigan State, a team with an SI heisman candidate who had 3.0 yards per carry in that game. Ohio State has beaten two sisters of the poor and one of them by a narrow margin when they trailed in the 4th.

Cal lost to Maryland on the road in crap weather with a dumb start time. That team had 31 seniors coming off a bowl season. Yeah, they were caught sleeping against MTSU who oh by the way just came about five feet from beating Kentucky.

Ohio State lost 35-3 to USC. The last time USC played Cal it ended 24-17.

Neither should be ranked if past reputation isn't taken into account.

I think all three of those teams (Utah, BYU, TCU) have been solid for the past few years. It's no surprise to see them all in a top 25 ballot. They may not be able to compete with the USC's and LSU's of the world, but not many do. I think on a neutral field, all could compete with all but a small handful of teams across the country. They have consistently beaten BCS teams. Utah should have beat Michigan by three touchdowns but made silly mistakes and have yet to play a complete game. But when they are on, they are powerful. We all saw what BYU can do. And TCU has reeled off several 10 win seasons in this decade. Their head to head match-ups could very well lead to a BCS bowl game.
