(My thanks to Grandmaster Graham for his Tuesday excellence)

While watching the Mets implode last night -- I've never seen a player enjoy beating a New York team more than Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins -- I started thinking about the players on the field at Shea Stadium who could one day find a home in Cooperstown. There were was one lock, two probables, and plenty of possibles.

Locks
Pedro Martinez

Probables
Johan Santana
Billy Wagner

Possibles
Chase Utley
Ryan Howard
Jimmy Rollins
Jose Reyes
David Wright
Carlos Beltran

Longshot
Carlos Delgado

This brings up an interesting piece by Newsday's Anthony Rieber who broke down the great players and the legends from the very good and good players to come up with the Newsday 100 -- a super-elite Hall of Fame.

Rieber has 10 current players who would qualify for superelite status including Martinez, A-Rod, Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr., John Smoltz, Mariano Rivera, Albert Pujols, Greg Maddux, Manny Ramirez, Randy Johnson and Ichiro Suzuki. If Chipper Jones hits above .370 this year, I might add him to the group above given his career totals.

Check out the piece. Rieber leaves off some interesting names for his Newsday 100, including Eddie Murray and Don Drysdale.

A super elite list should be much less, like 25 players. That would be interesting! 100 is way too many if this is truly super elite. Murray and DD belong on the next level when looking at it like that. Good topic!

statistics what seems to be considered "elite" seem to fall by the wayside in each decade......funny how when a player retires he is considered "a lock" but after a few years in retirement they don't look quite so elite.

I agree with Big West, FanNation's Athletic supporter.

There are some players who will always be elite. Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson are the two that come to mind right now (actively).

This isnt your main point but I think I know someone who likes beating the Mets better than Rollins. Chipper Jones. He even went as far as naming his kid Shea because of how good he plays there.

As for the elite group I think 100 might be a little too much also but 25 is too low considering that there are 225 players in the Hall of Fame and many more from this generation on their way. So id say 50 or even as high as 75 would be good.
