Rodriguez's strained right quadriceps will keep him from playing this week, causing him to miss this weekend's series against the crosstown rival New York Mets.
"It's still not where it needs to be. I don't see him playing this week," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You can't afford to have him come back for two days and lose him again for six weeks." Rodriguez, eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, had an MRI exam Monday, then worked out the Yankees' minor league complex in Tampa for an hour. He took batting practice, fielded ground balls and ran for about eight minutes in the outfield.
Rodriguez is making progress in his rehab from a strained right quadriceps, and the third baseman could rejoin New York Yankees late next week. He took 65 swings in batting practice and fielded 31 grounders at third base during his second injury rehabilitation workout at the Yankees' minor league complex.
Rodriguez has been on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps. The three-time AL MVP is scheduled for an MRI on Monday and is eligible to come off the DL Thursday, but Rodriguez's said he doesn't want to speculate about his return. If he gets the go-ahead after his MRI he could be cleared to start playing rehab games in extended spring training.
