Tournament Throwdowns Championship-Given an NFL expansion franchise for 2008 and able to pick any QB in the league or college, who do you take?

If I could have ANY QB out there to start an EXPANSION franchise with in 2008 I would take....

....Brady Quinn!

Here is why:

No college first round pick THIS YEAR:

Ryan, Boston College
Woodson, Kentucky
Brohm, Louisville

Meets my needs as a QB I would take with the #1 overall first pick as an expansion franchise, so then I look @ what NFL team would leave a QB available on the expansion list worthy of picking up:

Browns: Quinn(They have Derek Anderson and WILL sign him to long-term deal)

NO=Brees is too old
IND=Peyton isnt going anywhere
Buff=Edwards is staying, Losman=poop
Den=Cutler is staying in Den
Pitt-Big Ben is STEEL
Phi and GB=Donavon staying, Rodgers not worth risk
KC and HOU-Huard or Schaud=not worthy
Ten and Jax= VY and Garrard not avail
Atl=zero prospects
Min=will stay with Jackson
NE and NYJ=Brady and Clemmons not avail
CAR and STL= Moore and Bulger not avail
Mia and Wash=Rookie and Campbell not avail
Det and Oak=no prospect and Russell not avail
Romo=not avail
Rivers=not avail
T.Smith, A.Smith, Palmer, Leinert=not available

By process of elimination 4 NFL, BRADY QUINN is da best prospect to get at QB potentially in NFL, period

Wow. Great opening salvo. I don't think I've ever heard Losman called poop before.

On with my choice. I like all your reasoning for who is available. However, if I have my choice of *anyone* at all in college or pros,

I have to go with the 30 year old QB who just threw for 50 Touchdowns and only 8 INT's while taking his team to a perfect 16-0 season.

I am starting a brand new franchise, so I need a proven winner who can take my team to the playoffs and beyond.

I need a guy who can throw touchdowns with either Moss and Welker or Caldwell and Gaffney.

He has presence on and off the field, and can literally be the face of the franchise. More importantly, he's a known and proven quantity unlike the other Brady...Quinn.

Tom Brady would NEVER be available to an expansion franchise. NEVER.

He is the leader and face of the Pats and to even imagine him in another uniform next year under and expansion logo and helmet is borderline preposterous.

I guess I made this TD based on what was most likely to happen and not based on some hypothetical franchise's dream QB. That wont ever happen so what is the point of assuming it could?

Tom Brady isnt going anywhere, expansion team or otherwise.

Sorry Oso, but my rebuttal doesnt require 1200 characters to counter what would never be an option for an expansion team, namely the NFL MVP this year, Tom Brady.

You made this throwdown about availability. However, as it states in the title: "Given an NFL expansion franchise for 2008 and able to pick *any* QB in the league or college, who do you take?"

The emphasis is on taking any quarterback which means there is no limitation whatsoever by free agency, a franchise willing to trade, or your place in the 2008 NFL draft.

As such. I picked the best QB there is this year in the NFL. We can quibble on availability if you like, but the point is moot.

Your assumption is that the Browns will want to get rid of Quinn now that Anderson has had *one* good season.

Yet looking at the tattered landscape of riddled and injured QB's in the NFL there is slim to none chance the Browns want to squander their 2007 choice after having paid such a hefty price for him.

They would not get equivalent value if they were to trade him to your franchise.

If nothing else Anderson would be more available. But I would not want to gamble on a one season wonder, nor a QB from a shaky college program.

I would take the most proven QB in the NFL and make him the centerpiece of my expansion franchise.

However, an expansion franchise can only take a QB from the draft or off a team that leaves said QB available.

The Pats would not leave Brady available for pickup by an expansion team thus its not reality to say he could be had by said expansion team.

Brady Quinn would be the best available QB for an expansion team to get based on this criteria.

If you want to argue that Brady is the best pick for this TD based on the title alone, so be it and good luck Oso.

To quote Julius Ceasar: The die is cast. I chose Brady based on the assumption that I could chose any QB, no strings attached. This is the crux of the Throwdown, and as such I stand by that decision.

Your extensive list in the first argument does run the gamut of many of the players that might be available. But truthfully Brady Quinn would be on the lower end of choices for several reasons:

- He is an unproven QB who would struggle behind a makeshift offensive line. This is an expansion team, with a roster full of castoffs from other teams. His experience could be much like David Carr or Joey Harrington, but worse.

-With the lack of a track record for Quinn, it would be difficult to tailor an offensive system and team around him. The time it would take to develop him and the team would be devastating to the franchise just as it was to try to build around Tim Couch.

-Quinn could not beat out Charlie Frye or Derek Anderson to win the starting job in Cleveland. If he couldn't stand out there, then he really doesn't deserve a shot starting somewhere else.

Schaud should read Schaub, typo.

Uh...Cassidy, I may be missing something but doesn't the title say you can have ANY QB. Why are you ruling out Brady/Manning? If you think they won't be available then shouldn't the topic be:

"Given an NFL expansion franchise for 2008 and able to pick any QB that the other teams would leave unprotected in the league or college, who do you take?"

I'm not so sure the Browns are looking to move Quinn

Report Offensive Comment

The title also sounds like you can take anyone.

Report Offensive Comment

Brady or Manning would not be left available by their teams for an expansion team to pick up.

Report Offensive Comment

How do you know Quinn would? Isn't this all a bit too hypothetical if you first have to guess at who would and would not be available, then grab one of the hypothetical remaining quarterbacks for your hypothetical expansion team?

Report Offensive Comment

Please. Quinn is the most likely and best QB available for a hypothetical 2008 franchise. You can analyze it to death but the bottom line is all you need to worry about is what Oso decides to take and then vote on what is most likely to happen. Period.

Argument posted. I'd say may the best TDer win, but then only in Wade Phillips world would I have a chance. Ha ha...whoops. Hope no Cowboy fans take that the wrong way.

If it wasn't hypothetical like this, then it would be another Brady vs. Manning TD likely. And thats no fun for anyone.

If I were u OSO I would of picked Aaron Rodgers. That would of at least been arguable.

Cassidy's House | 01/15/08

I don't think I'd argue for someone who will be Favre's eventual replacement should Rodgers not be eligible for social security first.

I think you have made the crux of the argument the actual definition of the throwdown. We will see how it washes out.

Either way I am enjoying debating with someone who has a brain and actually knows something about sports. It's been a while. Good TD so far Cass.

I'm going to be heading out now. I'll pick this up later tonight or tomorrow. Have a good one.

Report Offensive Comment

I'd pick Tebow if he declared for the draft. But then we'd have the whole Maruice Clarett deal too.

Report Offensive Comment

By definition of the parameters set in the topic sentence by Cassidy, Oso is well within line to pick Tom Brady... and I'd rather have him than Quinn any day!!!

Besides, what has Quinn done to prove his worthiness as an NFL QB? I have much less confidence in his ability to come in and lead a team than I do with someone like Aaron Rodgers...

Report Offensive Comment

Tom 'Brady is only good because he has a GREAT team surrounding him

Report Offensive Comment

You're right, Cassidy, Tom Brady WOULD be off-limits for an expansion franchise.

Unfortunately, you failed to mention that the TD is strictly by the NFL rules of teams being allowed to protect certain players.

Obviously, that is usually implied, however your title DOES state: "able to pick any QB in the league or college"... so, uh, yeah... He should be allowed to take Brady.
