Athletes charged with anything from misdemeanors to felonies shouldn't lose their fan base until they are proven that they are guilty of the crime.

I'm from PA too; and! I was in Cambridge last week visiting a friend for the weekend. So.. PA, MA! I wanted to send you a friend invite instead, but couldn't do so with good conscience: I can't believe you're a Raven's fan growing up around here! I guess if you judge Michael Vick by his association with the private property that was found to be housing illegal dog fighting, you assume that the Raven's players, of which you're such a big fan, that have been accused of committing crimes are all innocent? Just to name a few.. Obstruction of justice, cocaine trafficking, intent to distribute, conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon...MURDER?? Jamal Lewis's arrest has been credited with dismantling a cocaine trafficking ring, for godsakes!. Who knows how many DUI'sthey have collectively really anymore .., and if you want me to go on I can. I'll tell you next time why Vick is completely innocent, and y hes one of the most influential players that represent the NFL to young fans all over the world. Ask me about how Vick has three of the four things that constitute a sensational quarterback, why he's innocent, & y the Ratbirds are worse than the Bungles w/ the law stuff. Les Go Steelers

You say that Vick is completely innocent. Just like you can't say for sure he's guilty, how can you say for sure he is innocent? With more evidence coming in, it seems more and more likely that he was directly involved with the dogfighting. Vick should absolutely NOT be a role model to any young people. He continues to make terrible decisions in his life; the Ron Mexico incident, the flipping off of fans, and the water bottle incident. Personally, I don't believe the "jewelry" store, and that there wasn't enough evidence to get him, but that's just my opinion. Regardless, he has shown to be immature and that trouble follows him. He is also just not a very good quarterback. His running game may be great, but he is a mediocre quarterback. He is terribly inaccurate, and shows an inability to read defenses. At this point in his career he shouldn't still be struggling with basic quarterbacking. Also, I do think less of Jamal Lewis and Ray Lewis, though Ray didn't actually murder someone, but was witness to it.

Whether you think he should be or not, Michael Vick is still a role model. His jersey was in the top 10 best selling last year. He???s 1 of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the NFL, immature or not. Let???s hate everyone who loses their cool in frustration.. Jake Plummer, Jeremy Shockey, Adam Morrison. Oh, & anyone caught with marijuana. You think we should never let Ricky play again? Who cares! It's not performance enhancing, if anything it makes him worse. They didn???t even find anything. Comparing these low-grade off-field criminal offenses with your jailbird team is laughable. I guess NOT possessing pot is worse than being involved in murder. The prosecution is seriously lacking a link from Vick to the house. You know what your cousin is doing in the middle of nowhere when you are managing your 20 million dollar a year career? Its so fair-weather to say he???s not a good quarterback. Although he lacks consistency, I???m not jumping off the bandwagon bc he???s so explosive & exciting to watch. Hes capable of breaking huge runs from anywhere on the field, he buys time to get receivers open, he can engineer huge yardage, hes agile, he has speed, he has a big arm, he demolishes the cover 2.

First of all, I'm not a fan of the Ravens. Apparently that first part of your argument is meant for somebody else, but I accepted this anyways. Second, yes, Ray Lewis should have been suspended, but Ricky Williams violated the NFL's drug policy multiple times, not to mention that it's illegal to smoke marijuana anyways. He deserved his suspension. If Ricky cleans up, sure he should play again, but so far it looks like he is going to keep doing his thing.
No it's not fair-weather to say he's not a good quarterback. I have drawn my own conclusions watching him play, and he is simply not a good quarterback. If a team plays a linebacker shadowing him, or has a quick enough linebacker, he can be contained. All teams need to do is watch the tapes of the Falcons games against the Buccaneers over the last few years. If they follow their example, he is easily stoppable. He may have a big arm, but just having a strong arm does not guarentee success. All the other attributes that successful quarterbacks have he is lacking.

Whether or not MV is a good quarterback or if he is eventually found guilty of the charges is irrelevant to what Im saying anyway. All I meant is the loyalty of fans to their teams is too easily swayed. I grew up watching my teams & I dont love them bc of how their seasons going & im not going to stop bc someone accused them of doing something they didnt do. Athletes are always accused of doing things that can permanently damage their reputations. You have to believe them every time? Even Jerome Bettis had to go through rape allegations, & I cant think of a better example of a player with high moral character. Wayne Gretzky was accused of gambling with his wife? He had no idea. People that point fingers, believe everything that they read, & jump to conclusions arent thinking about these peoples lives & families. The Duke lacrosse coach was fired days b4 being proven innocent. He had to move his family bc of people throwing things at their house & putting up signs in their lawn. People all over the country were condemning them & they were badly mistreated by everyone. They lost their entire season & they cant ever get those experiences back. They should have pursued a civil lawsuit.

Somehow, this throwdown got away from the headline, so I'll go back to it. Athletes who act like Vick are forever tainted, whether they are guilty or not. Really, do you think that O.J. Simpson should still be loved like he used to be? That is the perfect example why that statement is wrong. I don't think teams should lose their fans because of the actions(guilty or not) of players. But if a player continually breaks the law or acts in like manner, that players loses respect from me, and I think they should lose the respect of the fans. I do agree that the Duke case was unfortunate, and a rush to judgement, but in most cases judgement is warrented.

They shouldn't lose there fan base but people are to fair weather. Tons of people hate Kobe and Giambi but nothing has ever been proved they shouldn't lose there base but it's bound to happen

Why do we have to wait until they are found guilty? Most of the time they got off anyway since they are rich and can afford the best lawyers. Who here doesn't think OJ killed his wife? I can hate Kobe for any reason I want. Even if he was innocent on the sexual assualt charge he was still GUILTY of cheating on his new marriage and a newlyborn child. The man is a **** and as a fan I have a right to hate him for any reason I choose. I can hate anybody I want for represnting a thug life or thinking they are above the law. That is my right to free speech.

First of all there is the presumption of innocence in this country. Now, that said, that belief is held in our judicial system. However, in the court of public opinion, cynicism and negativity abound and the presumption is USUALLY (not always) guilty. In Vick's case, it certainly appears at this point that he knew a LOT more than he has let everyone know and that he was involved heavily in dog fighting for quite a while. He has yet to have his day in court (if that ever happens) but the REALITY of it all, is that he WILL lose fan base because of what is reported and what could ulitimately be true. So, it's a NICE thought that athletes charged with such things keep the loyalty of it's fan base, but that will not happen.

Playing in the NFL is not a right, it is a privilege. If you want to stay in the league don't go to a strip club at 3 in the morning with a gun. Guilty by association is enough. When was the last time Manning was arrested? Or Champ Bailey? Yeah, and not to mention that a star in the NFL will last for what maybe 15 years? just act right for that long and you can do whatever you want when you retire.

Athletes should be held to the same code of ethics as the rest of working America. That does not necessarily mean fire someone when they have been arrested in all situations. It depends on the situation and circumstances. While I agree bad role models are bad for everyone, they are individuals with the same liberties as the rest of us and we must respect that.

Athletes are in a high profile and luxurious position. The inequity between the money they get and what they do in terms of value to society is ridiculous. So I don't have any sympathy for a millionaire who continuously thinks he is above the rules. (Mike Vick or Pacman Jones we are looking at you.) As others have stated before being a pro athlete is a privilege. If you abuse that privilege you should lose the respect or position you have been given.

Regardless of guilt or innocence the mere association with unsavory types and bad situations will get you balckballed in most cases. My ten year old little brother had poster of his now ex-favorite player Mike Vick on his wall until yesterday. I think that speaks volumes over alot of dravel I've come across on the internet or sports media be it TV or radio.
