Blazers 13 game winning streak in December will be the best of this NBA season.

The magic season is quickly being replaced by reality, and this young team that played above its heads in Dec. and early Jan. is no longer an oversight by any team.

While other teams are heating up for the playoff run, Portland is lost and does not know how to play the role of the hunted. It doesn't help that James Jones is out (now for 3-5 more weeks), but not sure how much he would help at this point. I am grasping for one more hope that they will re-energize after the All Star break and make another push. If it doesn't happen, then it's the lottery we come.

Having said all that, the Blazers own the league's longest winning streak of the season at 13 games. With about 30 games left before the playoffs begin, I don't think any team in the league can match what the Blazers accomplished in December.

There is too much time left in the season, and too many good teams out there to rule out a longer streak. It's not even the all-star break and the Blazers are

The Celtics already have 3 separate 9 game win streaks this year, and once KG is back after the All-Star break, they will be looking to show that the first half was not a fluke. Plus, they're in the East, where Detroit is currently on an 8 game streak.

The Spurs tend to turn it on in the 2nd half. Nobody wants to face them in the playoffs, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them go on a long streak.

The Hornets have been great all year. 9 games is their longest so far.

The Rockets are currently riding a 7 game streak.

The Jazz just had a 10 game streak broken.

The Suns, if Shaq is half as motivated as he claims, will be dangerous. Last year they went on a 17 game win streak.

The Lakers, with Gasol and a motivated Kobe Bryant, have as good as shot as anyone.

There are mostly Western Conference teams, but any one of those mentioned has the talent to get hot and produce a 13+ winning streak before the year is done.

Melonhead, I am well aware of all the streaks you mentioned above. I don't think anyone out West will do it simply because they are literally killing each other.

Boston and Detroit has a chance, but they still have games against the West to play. BTW, Boston's ridiculous 16-0 record against the West has to end and it will very soon. Even before KG got hurt, the Celtics were already no longer playing at the same level they played early in the season.

My true reason for making this TD is not to say that no team out there is good enough to win 13 or more games in a row. My argument is that too many teams are playing with a purpose now, and any streaking team facing this level of competition (especially the West) cannot make a run like what Portland was able to achieve early in the season when they played like they were possessed.

I agree that it will be tougher for a Western Conference team to have a longer streak. There are so many teams that are capable of going on a long winning streak that chances are they will come up against each other more often. But it's not the playoffs so you still play teams that aren't so great.

There are no gimmes on the schedule, but teams who are already "looking towards next season" are, more often than not, losing the rest of the way against a determined, elite team like those I listed.

I think that Detroit has a great chance to extend its current streak past 13 games. @ Atlanta, vs. Indiana, vs. Orlando, and a home and home with Milwaukee. All of those teams are beatable, especially since the Magic have to come to Detroit to play. It's reasonable to think that the Blazers' streak will be tied next Friday in Detroit, if/when they beat the Bucks. There are similarly plausible scenarios all over the league.

There's still 30-some games left in the season, and a winning streak could happen at any time. There are too many teams with potential, and too many games left, to rule out a 13+ game winning streak.

Even if you Detroit prediction comes true and they tie the 13 games, they will lose at Phoenix on the 14th game. My argument holds true and the Blazers streak remains the longest of the season.

But I think Detroit will stumble to either Hawks or Magic before ever getting to Phoenix.

"I don't think any team in the league can match what the Blazers accomplished in December."

I took that to mean that we were talking about a 13 game, not a 14 game, streak. If Detroit loses to Phoenix in what would have been #14, they will still have matched the Blazers' streak.

Detroit is already 2-0 against Atlanta this year, so it's very unlikely they lose to them. They are 2-1 against Orlando, with the one loss coming by 2 in Orlando. The home-court advantage of Detroit, combined with the sting of the last loss, will help the Pistons avoid playing flat. Based on this season alone, Detroit has to be heavily favoured in both those games.

It was impossible to predict Portland doing it earlier in the season, and it's impossible to say with certainty that it will happen again. My main argument is that it's also impossible to deny that it will happen again to any of the other teams in the league.

The bottom line is that there are several teams with a realistic shot at winning 13+ games in a row, and it's more realistic to believe that one of them will during the rest of the season. Even if the Detroit streak falls apart, there is no shortage of teams ready to start a new one.

I would think that the Celtics play and Portland's crazy year would have taught us all that nothing is predictable.

I'll wait for more arguments, but I'm leaning right.

Boston and LA could break it

It would be nice if voters actually comment on their logic for why they vote one way or another.

Schedules are going to get tougher as the season progresses towards the playoffs; as such, I don't see another team running off a longer streak than the Blazers' 13 game steak as has been mentioned. I know that the Suns could go on a tear with O'Neal now in the lineup, but it's pretty silly at this point to assume anything based on his acquisition.

The Blazers are in great shape for this season despite a recent slide. Once Oden gets into the lineup and has fully recuperated from his injuries/surgeries, we'd all be advised to watch out.

I've enjoyed the Blazers this season. Their 13 game streak should stand up. I am not as optimistic as some however for the future. I think Greg Oden will be next Michael Olowokandi.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 13 games was the longest. When was the last time the team with the longest winning streak didn't make the playoffs? What better indication is there of the murderous ebb and flow in the West?

Cheers, Odenator

Melonhead, not that I am a TD vet by any means, but you did make some good arguments. Cheers.

For a first timer that is...

February 12, 2008  06:06 PM ET

i'd like the blazers to make the playoffs rather than the nuggets..

February 12, 2008  06:29 PM ET

Donny,

I couldn't agree with you more. It's no secret that the last spot on the West may come down to GS, DEN, and POR. If Portland cannot make it (looking more and more bleak), then I would root for GS (as wacky as that team is) because I absolutely hate the image that the Thuggets are portraying for the NBA.

February 12, 2008  06:47 PM ET

Yeah it's kind of hard to argue for something that 'could' happen versus a sure thing, but I do believe that there's a team out there that will get hot during the last little bit here. I'll be following the Pistons a little closer now to see if they were a good team to back for this
