The NFL has finally eliminated the "inadvertent face mask" rule. It will no longer be a 5 yard penalty just for touching a facemask. The only penalty now will be a 15-yard penalty if you grab, pull or twist the facemask. In other words, if you tackle a guy by the facemask, its 15 yards. If in the action of tackling a guy, your hand comes in contact with the facemask, it isn't a penalty at all. This is a brilliant change by the rules committee.

I don't know about that. If you're taught to tackle the body, then why is your hand anywhere near the guys face?

Also, even if its inadverant, it's still not allowed. If the runner's progress is impeded in any way, shape, or form, it's illegal, regardless of intent.

People still pay fines for inadvertant offenses in real life.

And then it just starts asking new questions about what's really inadvertant. Don't you think that some players will try to push the boundries and intentionally inadvertantly grab a facemask?

The facemask is and should remain completely off limits. These are pro players and should fully know how to tackle without getting anywhere near the facemask.

Thanks for supporting my argument. I'm really not sure why you took this if you agree with me.

I clearly said it would be a 15 yard penalty if they actually grabbed, pulled or twisted the facemask.

But the "inadvertent" 5 yard penalty they previously had was for times when there was no impediment of progress, in any way, shape or form. If you TOUCHED the facemask, it was 5 yards.

As for the rest of your argument, obviously you've never played the game.

And for your last paragraph, you are completely WRONG. Because as of last week, the facemask IS NOT completely off limits. So stating that it is means you don't know the new rule. You can touch it not, as long as you don't grab it.

I'm not saying in reality, I'm saying to correctly and legitimately play the game of football.

what you said about the 15 yard penalty is what it's always been, so you're not breaking any news there. I haven't seen any flags get thrown for inadvertant when the progress isn't impeded. I see inadvertant flags thrown when DURING A TACKLE, the hand lands on the facemask and doesn't stay there. However, why is there a hand on the mask in the first place?

Should we review all the other rules and rule out inadvertant Pass interferece? How about inadvertant contact with the ball like in a situation where during a punt, the ball inadvertantly hits someones leg who wasn't going for the ball?

you're saying the rule make sense and I don't think it does. I think hitting the facemask should garner some sort of penalty regardless of intent.

You think the end result is exclusive of intent, but its not. that's what doesn't make sense to me. So the rule doesn't make sense, especially where all other infractions that could be deemed intentional or inadvertant, stay the same.

Remember you're arguing making sense not establishing what has happened.

Well, since you admit that you've seen a 5 yard penalty, during a tackle, when the hand lands on the facemask but doesn't stay there...I guess you understand why the penalty was eliminated. Its just a dumb penalty. A penalty should only be called when the action has an outcome on the play, or is dangerous to the players.

And no, I'm not saying end result is exclusive of intent. I don't care if someone "intended" to break someone's neck by grabbing the facemask and twisting the head around. The end result is what matters. The end result of touching someone's facemask is....well....nothing happened. So no penalty should be enforced.

Inadvertent pass interference still changes the outcome of the play. Inadvertent touching of the facemask does not.

Nice Argument Powdered Toast, but I gotta go with Mod Target here....

I'm glad. The 5yd variety sucked. I mean, when you hit someone you might roll over them and your arm/hand might touch the facemask. And you get a 5yd penalty for that? I'm glad it's gone. This is football people. Another one I can't stand: The Horse-collar tackle rule. That's stupid too. Tackling is tackling. If you can't play, sit down.

April 3, 2008  11:42 AM ET

if you can't tackle someone until they've passed you, sit down.

April 3, 2008  11:44 AM ET

and you wouldn't get an inadvertant FM call if the tackel already happened and bodies piling up just resulted in your hand touching the mask. That flag has never been thrown for that.

April 3, 2008  11:45 AM ET

the horse collar is foul. You're basically pulling the torso back while the legs are still moving forward, which does result in injuries.

April 3, 2008  11:54 AM ET

I always love it when the jackass on the other side says I've Obviously never done this or that.....dude you've obviously never been able to argue a concept without alienating people.

That's the dumbest thing I've heard here on FanNation. Seriously. So if he gets passed me, I shouldn't run him down and save the touchdown? Dumb.

No one said anything about a pile up. If I hit someone, there are variables on whats gonna happen. If I happen to touch his mask in the process of bringing him down, but not bringing him down by his mask or turning his head, they would've thrown the flag.

Yea, but they've been doing it for many, many years. Odds are you won't get hurt. The only reason they started calling it was because Roy hurt two name players. A name player hurting another name player will draw attention. If Roy would've done it to a 3rd stringer, they would say "Football is a violent game, and people can get hurt."

April 3, 2008  01:28 PM ET

so two big name players get hurt and "odds are you won't get hurt"?

April 3, 2008  01:28 PM ET

it's dirty. period. and if players do it all the time, then why is is unofficailly known as the Roy Williams rule?

April 3, 2008  01:30 PM ET

if you can't play, sit down is the dumbest thing that I'VE seen on here. That's the problem. People are playing and others are resorting to cheap tactics to get by. That's what I would consider not playing.

April 3, 2008  01:52 PM ET

I liked the inadvertant face mask rule. Prior to that rule a player who got his hand "caught" in the face mask but the head did not move, it was 15 yards, unfair. Sometimes a defender was able to grab the face mask and tackle, using the mask, but the head did not move enough to make it flagrant and it was no penalty. The inadvertant face mask penalty allowed for fairer penalties regarding facemasks and acted as a rightful deterent for going to the head. Now it willbe all or nothing again, and that did not work the first time around, why do we think it will work now?

Well, the NFL has been around a long time, chief, and they barely started getting hurt.

I just said why. Because he hurt T.O. and McNabb. The tackle itself doesn't hurt. It's when the tackler falls on the back of the leg. But that usually doesn't happen.

It's a man's game. If you wanna shy away from contact, go play baseball. It's not cheap. I don't understand what the difference between pulling someone down by their hair and pulling them down by their shoulder pads. Only that one warrants a 15yd penalty. Retarded.

April 3, 2008  02:45 PM ET

This will hurt the NFL, because think about how fast the game goes, some refs willl see a guys hand on face, and not sure whether or not it should be a no call or 15 yard penalty. Keep the 5 yard penalty for those times.

April 3, 2008  03:26 PM ET

They also have changed the push out rule which never made any sense to me.

April 3, 2008  03:36 PM ET

Dude on right powder toasted his own argument.

April 3, 2008  03:49 PM ET

Yeah I hated the force out rule. R.I.P though I'll never miss you.
