Will Coco Crisp be playing for the Redsox after the trading deadline?

I am arguing that he will not be. The redsox have an excellent Centerfielder in ellsbury and although keeping Coco would be a win/win for the Redsox. Coco would not be happy not getting innings and just sitting around, while he could be making a difference elsewhere. Not to mention, the redsox could use him to go out and augment their ailing Bullpen right now. I could catch some flack for that statement, but thats another argument.

I think they will probably end up trading him before the trading deadline to augment their Bullpen and maybe pick up a player to be named later too. It will free up some money for them as well. I dont think they will make this move now.. because they need him right now as their staff has had some minor injuries, but I do think they are actively looking to see what the best options are going to be for him. He is a great player and I think he is better suited somewhere else if he is not going to get 100% of the playing time. Anyone disagree?

I'll say they keep him. Ellsbury is still young and has never played a full year. He's hitting .280, which is good but not great. Coco is hitting .290 right now which isn't bad at all. Is he an everyday player in Boston? No, but I think he helps the team and would LOVE to win another WS title with the club. He adds a pesky switch-hitting bat on the bench who has blazing speed and plays very good D. Splitting time in CF between Ellsbury and Coco gives the team more flexibility and improves the bench.

At the same time, I doubt you're getting a really good relief arm for him. You may get an average bullpen guy and a fairly good prospect but not a big arm for the pen. And his struggles playing everyday in Boston would turn teams off anyway. I know he's an expensive platoon player, but the Sox have money. And if it works, don't change it. I think it's a good platoon to have and I think they'll keep him.

The Red Sox don't have much speed so having a switch-hitting speed guy to be able to put in and also have great D to go with that fits. Coco is off to a good start and they should ride that as long as possible because he adds depth to the team.

As much as I'd REALLY love to do this, its Friday, and I have no time.

I picked a really bad time to do this. I will post my argument tomorrow.

I certainly hope the Sox have enough sense to get some value for him. It's pointless to carry Ellsbury and Crisp. Ellsbury is younger, cheaper, has 140 points of OPS on Crisp, and is every bit as good a baserunner.

Crisp has a low ceiling, offensively. He's too expensive to carry as defensive specialist. Ellsbury hits rings around him, and there's every indication that Ellsbury's fielding will be just as good also.

Trade Covelli and get some more pitching depth.

All that said, I have to go right here since so many turns were forfeited.
