It has to be Chris Johnson taken by the Tennessee Titans. He will be able to provide in the kick return game, but that was not a first round need. They could have used a receiver, defensive end, and cornerback. Jevon Kearse and Vanden Bosch are both declining which is why they need a defensive end and Pacman was traded away, leaving a hole at cornerback.
Their running game was successful last season. LenDale White had over 1,000 yards last season. Sure they lost Chris Brown, but he was never great. Running back was not this big of a need. Also, every single wide receiver was still on the board. Including Limas Sweed, who went to Texas like Vince Young did.
The Titan's leading receiver last season was Justin Gage who had 750 receiving yards. Gage is not an elite receiver and until the Titans get one they will not know what Young is capable of.
Now let's look at Johnson. He ran the fastest forty time at the combine, but speed is not everything in the NFL. He is 5'11" and aroudn 200 pounds, can he stand up to the physicality? He can't go inside, in fact, he rarely tries to! He isn't a good blocker and he isn't very durable. This pick was neither a good value pick or a need.

Oakland Raiders selecting Darren McFadden was the worst 1st round pick.
The Raiders have more problems on defense than the Raiders do and they passed on Dorsey to select McFadden.
The Raiders defense was ranked 22nd last year and they ranked 31st (next to last) against the run. The retirement of Sapp will not help. Terdell Sands and Gerrard Warren are not the answer.
On the flip side the Raiders ranked 25th in offense but that was not the running backs problem because they ranked 6th in the NFL in rushing at 295 YPG. Michael Bush, last years 4th round pick, may be ready to play this year also and if he is healthy he is a stud.

Darren McFadden wouldn't be the worst pick of the first round no matter who drafted him, He is a great prospect and he is almost impossible to pass up even at four. Yes they have more problems, but so do the Titans. McFadden was a good value pick even though it was so early, Chris Johnson wasn't. McFadden has the skill to be the number one pick of the draft, I could see Chris Johnson going somewhere in the second or third round.
The Raiders see McFadden taking the load off of JaMarcus Russell's back. A receiver would have done that, but no receiver was worthy of that pick. They did have the penultimate run defense, but the Titans were 27th passing the ball.
Teams do not always need to draft for need. The Raiders may have gone for the "best player available" approach, which led to McFadden. Tha fact of the matter is the Raiders didn't go for need, but they did get a worthy player. The Titans, on the other hand, did neither.
The bottom line is the Titans need a receiver. Devin Thomas, Limas Sweed, DeSean Jackson, and Malcolm Kelly were all available. If they drafted Chris Johnson to return kicks they should have taken DeSean Jackson. Chris Johson just is not their man.

Every draft publication and draft expert on TV had Dorsey rated higher than McFadden and agreed that defensive line would of been the best place for the Raiders to select.
Considering McFaddens history of off the field probems, problems coughing up the ball and sharing carries alot like Reggie Bush, it really was not the best value for Oakland. It will be even more evident when they are drafting in the top 5 again next year.
Tennessee on the other hand is a playoff team. Furthurmore, they are a run oriented playoff team so it only makes sense if you lose a player such as Chris Brown you replace him. If Johnson graded high for the Titans then why fault them. Lendale White can't do it by himself so Johnson makes a solid team better and.... wait for it..... DEEPER.
Jeff Fisher has no intention of being a top passing team.

I never said anyone had McFadden above Dorsey, I'm just saying that McFadden wasn't as much of a reach. He is a great player and he has the potential to be a star. I realize it wasn't a smart pick by the Raiders, but Chris Johnson was much dumber. His history of off the field problems is a few fights and family members having problems. And if you read my argument you would see that who ever interviewed him realized that he is a good person with the intention to do the right thing. I also said that he can be coached to hold onto the ball better and change his running style. Yes he shared carries, much like he will at Oakland! There are other good running backs at Oakland to share the load with.
They did not replace Brown. Johnson will be like a less talented Reggie. He is fast, but he doesn't break tackles, he rarely tries to go inside and when he does he fails, and he isn't even 200 pounds. He will get beaten up by the big defenders.
I never said anything about being a top passing team. I said that they need a receiver. They can not let Vince Young throw to terrible receivers for his entire career. Limas Sweed or Devin Thomas would have been a better need and value pick.

the draft is not about reaching, it's about making your team better. A team like Tennessee, who is a playoff caliber team did that.
I use New England as an example, 3 years ago draft "experts" thought the Patriots reached when they drafted a gaurd by the name of Logan Mankin. What has ever happened to him? Oh yeah he is a pro-bowler and an cog in a very solid offensive line.
Your main arguement is the lack of receivers that the Titans have! Go do a little research in Chris Johnson. last year he caught 37 balls for 528 yards. That is almost a 15 yard average. he also caught 6 TD passes.
And let me let you in on something. Chris Johnson is 5'11, runs like a gazelle and has great hands.. Don't be suprised if the Titans actually drafted a WR in the 1st round.

Flacco was absolutely NOT the best QB that was left. I agree on that note, but the argument could be made that the Ravens needed a QB and they got one. I have to say that Brian Brohm and Chad Henne were better choices.

Report Offensive CommentJoe Flacco is a quarterback and that was what the Ravens needed. They may not have gotten a good value pick, but at least they took a position that had a need.
The Jags was a bad move, they did not need to move up that far, but Harvey, like Flacco, filled a need.

Report Offensive CommentChirs Johnson was a perfect fit for the Titans, they needed a speedy playmaker in the backfield, something theyve never had. He may have been a bit of a reach, but so was McFadden given his personal issues, straight up running style, fumble problems, and lck of lower body strngth. Plus, theyre paying McFadden way more money than the Titans are Johnson, its a far greater risk for the Raiders. It was a bad bad pick for the Raiders since they wouldve had a top ranked runnin game without him. They did last year.

He may be a perfect fit, but the Titans NEED a receiver as well as a few other positions! It was just not smart for them to take a running back so early when they have other more pressing needs. Their speed may not do well. Look at Reggie Bush, Johnson is like Reggie Bush, just worse! He can not go inside at all.
McFadden was certainly worthy of the fourth pick of the draft and it was not a reach. He was the Heisman runner up two years in a row and he absolutely dominated against some of the best defenses in the nation. He can be coached through his fumbling and running style problems and the teams that interviewed McFadden all have said that he is a good person. Of course it is a greater risk. It always is when you draft earlier.

Report Offensive CommentDrafting players isnt always about needs...You have to get the best player on your board when you're pick is up. if you have a RB at the top of your board when your pick is up and the best WR at that point on your board is like 10th, you cant take the WR.
Lights Out again | 05/03/08, 02:25 PM
Report Offensive CommentYou could make the arguement he was a reach at 4. There are plenty of "draft experts" and even GMs who would tell you the same thing. He has an upright running style that teams dont like, he fumbles too much in important situations, and doesnt break arm tackles. Thats not a top 5 pick in my book. Maybe its just me.

And Chris Johnson should not have been at the top of that board! Darren McFadden is a great player so I can see why he would be up there. You would know if you read my arguments that I know it isn't just about needs. Darren McFadden was more deserveing of the fourth pick than Chris Johnson was of the 24th.

As I said earlier, he can be taught out of a few of those problems. He isn't top five, but a guy who only has speed, doesn't break tackles, doesn't have durability, isn't physical, is small, and can't run inside is first round?

The Reggie Bush would be more relevant for Chris Johnson considering they are both smaller guys who rely on speed and elusiveness. I never said he will be a great NFL player, I pointed out he was a great player in college football. He was better than Johnson was.
