Best Pitcher, This Season, in the MLB

Choose 1st
Argue 2nd and 3rd

My pick...Cliff Lee

6-0
0.81 ERA
0.60 WHIP
39 K's

Brandon Webb

8-0
2.41 ERA
1.00 WHIP
41K's

I picked Cliff Lee for several reasons here.

The first reason is Cliff Lee pitching in 2 less starts this year, but having almost the same amount of strikeouts, plus having an under 1.00 ERA and WHIP, which is incredible.

Brandon Webb gets a lot of run support, while Lee doesn't get as much run support. Lee has to shut down the other team, and not allow many runs, while Webb can allow runs, but will get run support anyway.

Lee also has 1 complete game shutout this year, and Webb doesn't.

Lee plays for the Indians, which isn't as good as the Diamondbacks so far this season. Lee also needs to make sure that he doesn't allow many walks, or runs at all. He has only allowed 2 walks this year. Webb has allowed 16 walks. Webb has also allowed 2 HRs while Lee has only allowed 1.

Cliff Lee has really had to pitch well to reach 6-0, but Webb hasn't really had a need to pitch as well. He still pitched well, but not as well as Lee.

Lee allows less than 1 run a game, while Webb allows more than 2 runs a game.

Well for one, Cliff Lee play with one of the most potent offenses in the AL they ranked in the top five in runs scored and won the tough AL Central, so don't tell me he won't get run support.
Some luck is involved in winning 8 games, but more luck is involved in what Cliff Lee has done and he won't keep this up. While Brandon Webb has the better skill set, as the best sinkerballer in the MLB and the better team. Also the fact that most sinkerballers aren't techncally strikeout pitchers, the fact that he has so many is astounding. Also his GO:AO ratio is more than 2:1, at 57:21, while Cliff Lee's is a terrible 37:42.
Also If 8 wins doesnt prove that you're a dominant pitcher than something is wrong with you definition of one.
At the end of the season, who do you think will be the front runner for the Cy Young award, Brandon Webb or the jumpstart Cliff Lee?

Lee plays in the AL so he has even tougher teams to pitch again, plus he doesn't get the luxury of pitching against the opposing pitcher, which is most likely an out.

Lee has to go with 9 hitters, and he has to face them. He is doing better in a harder league, then Webb is doing in an easier league.

Lee gets some run support, but he allows 0-1 run a game, and you are going to win most of your games if you do that.

When you are giving up 2+ runs a game, winning 8 games in your first 8 starts, is luck. Cliff Lee is a little luck, but mostly skill. This year, he has an under 1.00 ERA, under 1.00 WHIP, a 6-0 record, and Lee is really dominating the opponents he faces.

I'm not saying 8-0 isn't dominant, but Cliff Lee is more dominant. He has an UNDER 1 ERA and WHIP, and has ONLY 2 walks. That is insane!

This isn't a prediction TD, it is a TD stating who is the best pitcher in the MLB so far, and I'm saying that Cliff Lee is.

You can't deny this talent so far in the season.

Lee plays in a tough AL, while Webb plays in an average NL. AL is a tougher division for pitchers to pitch in, and Cliff Lee is dominanting it.

Cliff Lee is the best pitcher in the MLB.

"This isn't a prediction TD, it is a TD stating who is the best pitcher in the MLB so far, and I'm saying that Cliff Lee is."
Well next time put that in the title, as I read it, it says "Best Pitcher, This Season, in the MLB" so I interpret it as the pitcher who will pitch the best this season. Lee's ERA last year was a horrendus 6.29 and the year before that it was 4.40 with his career ERA being 4.42. So by saying the he's playing on mostly skill is a monstrous overstatement.
Secondly, since Cliff Lee does play in "a tough AL" he won't continue his torrid pace and will falter soon. In only 2 of his 7 seasons has Lee pitched over 180 innings and the year after he pitched his last 200 inning season he succumbed to injury. So he's no workhorse.
Also, in his 7 seasons Lee has pitched only 4 CGs and never more than 1 in an entire season. While Webb has pitched 13 CGs and has thrown for over 180 innings for every season of his entire career. And in those 1145.0 innings he's ERA is a terrific 3.18.
So the track records show that Webb is, and will be the better pitcher for the rest of the season and is at this moment.
Lee has pitched aganist mediocre offenses:Mariners A's, Royals?

Good luck aladdin1192...

Good point aladdin.

.... I just saw these exact same picks not even an hour ago.... No vote unless original arguments from either side.

I thought about picking Johan or even Felix Hernandez (when he keeps his emotions in check and keeps poise, he's a top 5 guy), but really Webb is the best choice.

sorry about all of the grammar errors, I was preoccupied...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year, five AL teams scored more runs than the Indians. In fact, they only scored 2% more runs than league average.

Also, the TD says "Best Pitcher, This Season." Nine AL teams have scored more than the Indians this year.

While Brandon Webb has the better skill set, as the best sinkerballer in the MLB and the better team.

===========================================================

Indians are much better than the Diamondbacks. Period.

Report Offensive Comment

Right the best pitcher this season will be Brandon Webb, hands down, how cna you tell me Cliff Lee will outpitch the likes of Webb, Johan Santana, Jake Peavy, Josh Beckett, Erik Bedard, this list goes on with better pitchers with better skill sets and overall team play. It's mindboggling to say that those guys will pitch WORSE than Cliff Lee

Report Offensive Comment

The D-Backs have give Webb an average run support of 6 runs per game. The Indians have given Lee 4.33.

Half of Webb's starts, he's given up two runs or more. If Lee gave up two runs in half of his starts, he'd be 3-3 - He's only given up two or more in one game.

Webb has faced CIN, COL (twice), SF (twice), SD, NYM, and PHI. Only the Phillies are ranked in the top half of runs scored in the NL so far this year at #4 of 16. The Mets are 10, Rockies 11, Reds 12, Giants 15, and Padres 16. In other words, so far, Webb has basically faced the biggest offensive jokes from a big-ast joke of a division.

There are four kinds of people that may think Webb has been better than Cliff Lee so far: Diamondback fans, Webb's parents, Webb's grandparents, and mongoloids -- vote accordingly.
