Clearly, the worst NHL trade ever was the trade between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals in 2001. In that trade, Pittsburgh sent Jaromir Jagr and Frantisek Kucera to the Caps in exchange for Kris Beech, Ross Lupaschuk, and Michael Sivek.
That trade was a bust in many ways. First, NONE of these players are playing for the teams they were traded to. More on that in the 2nd argument.
Also, the statistics for these 5 men is less than compelling after their trades.
For the Caps:
Jagr: 2+ seasons, 83 total goals, 118 total assists, 201 points, and a total PIM (penalties in minutes).
Kucera: Splitting time between NHL and a Czech league, in 56 games for the Caps he had 1 goal, 133 assists, and 14 points.
For the Pens:
Beech: Split time for 2 years between the NHL and AHL, and in 16 TOTAL games (over 2 years) he has 2 points (both are assists).
Lupaschuk: This trade happened in 2001, and Lupaschuk didnt even suit up for the Pens until 2002 for ONLY 3 GAMES. He amassed a whopping 0 points.
Sivek: Also didnt suit up until 2002, and in 38 games, scored 3 goals and 3 assists for a total of 6 points.
More to come. Out of space.

November 1978 The WHA Indianapolis Racers traded Wayne Gretzy, Ed Mio, and Peter Driscoll to Edmonton Oilers for cash and future consideration.
They traded the best hockey player, in my opinion, and a couple other players for cash?
Wayne Gretzky went on to help all the teams that he played for, including the Edmonton Oilers. Gretzky was a big contributor when he played, and trading him for cash is a really bad trade for the Indy Racers.
Wayne Gretzky getting traded for cash is the worst deal that can happen.
The trade above was a bad trade, but not as bad as the Gretzky trade.
That is the dumbest move I have ever heard of.
gonets said 05/11, 11:03 PM
That is NOT a dumb move, but rather one of desperation and trying to save a dwindling franchise. The Racers were nearly bankrupt, and HAD to unload those players, or the team would have folded. Heck, it folded anyway, 17 days AFTER that trade. In contrast, the Jagr trade was not one of survival, merely of acquiring top prospects. The three players the Pens acquired were supposed to be top prospects that never materialized.
Sivek after his time between the NHL and AHL, went overseas and hasnt been seen in the NHL since. Beech, after his brief stints wtih the NHL and AHL Penguins, got traded to the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL, the affiliate of the Predators, and later was traded BACK to the Capitals. Since then, he bounced around between the Pens (again), Vancouver, and Columbus, all in one season, totaling 25 games in all. Lupaschuk, after his 3 game appearnace, played 2 more years in the AHL, and has been overseas since, also not seen in the NHL again.
The 2 Caps acquisitions were also disappointments. Kucera, after his time with the Caps, joined Sivek in a Czech league and has never been heard from again.
More to come on Jagr. Out of space.

It should read 13 assists for Kucera, NOT 133

Report Offensive CommentThought this was worst NHL trade?
Now had right said...The Peter Puck Pocklington deal with Bruce the crook Mcnall in L.A for a cash laden deal....you might be onto something...but the deal right is talking about was a WHA deal and its also why Wayner never was eligible to with the Calder when the Oilers moved to the NHL.
Personally, I think there were much worse trades out there...but if right is using a WHA trade I have to vote left as its the only NHL trade on the table here.

Report Offensive CommentYou two should look in on this other HPT tounament TD. The arguments are all in. Only the voting remains.

Report Offensive CommentThere is a difference between the two trades, the WHA. was almost forced into trading the Great one, im not gonna vote yet , but like nets said, if they didnt unload them they would have Gone bankrupt.
The A-Wall Show | 05/12/08, 07:39 AM
Report Offensive CommentThe Jagr trade was a salary dump... The Gretzky trade listed here was a WHA trade not an NHL Trade... Vote Left...
But the worst trade in the NHL isn't even listed here... It was...
Toronto and Calgary...
To Toronto...
Doug Gilmour, Jamie Macoun, Ric Nattress, Kent Manderville and Rick Wamsley
To Clagary...
Gary Leeman, Alexander Godynyuk, Jeff Reese, Michel Petit and Craig Berube.
The 10 player deal was the largest in NHL history, and statistically speaking, one of the most lopsided.

Report Offensive CommentTed Lindsey being stripped of his captaincy & sent out of Detroit in 1957-58 is the worst trade ever from a standpoint of what it did to the team, league and player... Lindsey filed an anti-trust suit, and this paved the way for the eventual formation of the NHLPA (one of the reasons Lindsey had fallen out of favor with Jack Adams was his advocacy of a players' union...)

Report Offensive CommentThat is a great worst one Bigalke.
Foosball came up with a gem too. As far as a straight up swap, The Kordic for Courtnall was pretty bad between the Leafs and Habs.
But for impact and hype and Stanley cup impact...
The worst trade of all time based on player talent and cash exchange...Was LINDROS. Details below.
Details: Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Steve Duchesne, a 1st round selection (Jocelyn Thibault) in 1993, a 1st round selection (later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, later traded to the Washington Capitals - Nolan Baumgartner) in 1994, and $15,000,000 cash to the Nordiques. The Flyers received Eric Lindros.
Baun-ded | 05/12/08, 10:27 AM
Report Offensive CommentAlso Bigalke, as far as Original Six...I might argue that the Canadians shipping out Doug Harvey to the pathetic Rangers was right up there to. Similar circumstances to the Lindsey deal as well as being stripped of his Captaincy and was traded as punishment. Problem is...you and I might be the only guys on Fannation that know about those deals.

Report Offensive CommentI think he means Bigalke and I gonets. Bigalke is "Empirically" one of the Best TDers around and can drive you MAD with arguments. He is also a great and fair member and not a homer.
In fact, There should be some kind of monthly award on Fannation for guys like Zach...Maybe the Alfred E Neuman award?
I can't understand how a WHA sell off gets votes on a NHL TD!
Besides that, Gretzky would have ended up in the NHL regardless once the NHL swallowed up the WHA.
On top of all that, the sell off of Gretzky was a win/win for both parties.
