Joba's reaction after the strikeout of Dellucci is not a big deal.

Gossage said he didn't think Chamberlain's reaction after striking out Dellucci was good for baseball. Huh? Why can't Joba show emotion in sports? In a city where if you fail, you're basically crucified by the media, Joba did just that by giving up a big three-run homer in the eighth on May 7th. So, when Dellucci came up again the next day in another big spot and Joba did strike him out, its understandable that Joba would be a little fired up. I hate how these old guys, who think there is only one way to act during a game, come back and rip on a hung man for being a little fired up. Gossage, seriously, shut up.

I'm a Yankee fan, and I love Joba. But what he did makes me cringe and kinda embarrassed.

"Why can't Joba show emotion in sports?"

Emotion is all fine and dandy, but taking it to the extreme is obnoxious. Joba struck out David in the 8th inning with a 3 run lead in May. If it was Game 7 of the WS in the bottom of the 9th, that's perfectly understandable. But that's uncalled for in that spot. It's childish and he needs to grow up.

"being a little fired up"

That wasn't a little, that was a lot. A twist around, a huge scream, and a fist pump in a May game. Seriously. And if he keeps doing that, it's gonna come back to haunt him. Hitters don't and won't like that and it's understandable. And it's not only with Joba. Papelbon does it, K-Rod does it, it's becoming more common. But acting that bold during a small out like that is completely unnecessary.

Joba has to be more mature. The best players are the ones that looking at them you couldn't tell if they won or lost. They don't over celebrate nor sulk in their failure. It happens and move on to the next game. There's a right time and a wrong time for emotion. That was a wrong time.

Take Mo for example. He's the greatest closer ever (IMO) and he's one of the definite fan favorites. If it wasn't for him, that late 90's dynasty would never have happen (once again, IMO). He goes out there and he's as dependable both physically and emotionally as you can get.

Showing that much emotion at a time like that isn't needed and creates more attention. And I think Goose has the right to talk. It's not like it some journeyman pitcher who's just trying to get some coverage. Goose is another one of the greatest closers of all time and he's a HOFer. He knows how the majors work. And I know if he was a manager, he wouldn't take that. And he shouldn't because it's stupid and it shows up the other team.

Me personally, I'd love to always show my emotion at any given moment. But if if you do it too much, it's just annoying.

Barry Sanders never had a endzone dance.......Why? Cause it wasnt the first time he been in the endzone. Is this Joba's first K??? Has he ever struck out an opposing batter???

May 13, 2008  03:16 PM ET

Clearly Joba should just relax. Being a professional means controlling yourself- it doesn't mean you can't be happy or celebrate, but you do it in a classy way that doesn't show up the other guy.

On the other hand, it's not really Gossage's business and he should probably just shut up about it. Part of what turns things like this into news is a third party getting involved for no reason.

Porkins, this was already a big deal in, in NY at least.

And I think Gossage has earned the right to talk, seeing has he was such a great closer in his day and now a HOFer. It's not like this is...(pick a random name).

May 13, 2008  03:23 PM ET

I know Goose was a great closer. But drawing attention to an idiotic act isn't always the smartest move.

May 13, 2008  03:24 PM ET

Its better for him not act like a Donkey cause he does one thing good. Being stoic is always the best way to go. Don't let your opposition know what is going on in your head. This goes for all competition.

May 13, 2008  03:25 PM ET

That's true, and we all know Gossage is very vocal.

May 13, 2008  03:27 PM ET

Whether or not its a big deal is relative. Nothing in sports is a big deal. That is what is so cool about sports. Its a stupid thing to do. Excessive celebration can come back to bite you. Bill Gramatica ring a bell?

Yankees suck!

May 13, 2008  03:39 PM ET

the kid needs time to grow up. its not a huge deal, just something he need to know is not necessary.

May 13, 2008  03:48 PM ET

Marlins suck!

May 13, 2008  03:48 PM ET

Coletrain has the better arugment, but i see nothing wrong with Joba's actions. Zambrano gets like that all the time, and no one calls him out on it. More emotion in sports is needed, especially in baseball. It's too much fo a drag otherwise.

Even though I agree with left, vote goes right cuz of better arguments.

May 13, 2008  03:49 PM ET

Yankees suck more than the Marlins suck!

May 13, 2008  03:52 PM ET

Yankees rule more than the Marlins rule!

May 13, 2008  04:25 PM ET

I liked coles argument better, so vote goes cole's way

May 13, 2008  04:40 PM ET

All I have to say is ------ How about them Astros??

May 13, 2008  04:41 PM ET

Sorry Coletrain - I just couldnt resist....

May 13, 2008  04:52 PM ET

Ugh....can't believe the Astros right now...Berkman hitting like Ted Williams and the team coming from behind every game...

May 13, 2008  05:09 PM ET

I just hope he stays hot...Its nice to be an Astros fan right now...Everyone counted them out before the season even started, and they are on a good run right now....But hey, this is your TD, so I will keep my statements to myself...

Coletrain - Your arguments seem more pointed, so you got the vote..

Hey, you have the right to gloat at the moment. Tejada turned out to be a great move thus far and everyone did (including me) counted them out in March. And in that division, anything is possible.
