I will take the runner-up, Magglio Ordonez. He led the league in batting aeverage, thus winning the batting title, with a .363 average. His OBP was .434, his SLG was .595, and his OPS was 1.029. He had 28 HRs, and 139 RBIs in 157 games, while only striking out 79 times, about an average of once every 2 games.
Honestly, I think ARod was ONLY MVP because of all the damage he did in April,a nd the fact that he hit 54 HRs. But in the postseason he choked. The Tigers never made the postseason last year,a nd so I think that helped diminish Ordonez's value as MVP, even though he carried hsi team.
Ordonez made the All-Star Game and committed only 1 error all season in right field, while racking up 261 put-outs and 4 assists. ARod committed 13 errors at third base last year, had 251 assists, and 106 put-outs. Now 13 errors in 162 games is a great ratio, but 1 error is even better. Ordonez was the better fielder, the better hitter (except the HRs), and the better all-around player in 2007.
He should have won. But ARod got it because the Yankees made the playoffs and the Tigers didnt. And that shouldnt matter.
More to come.

It should be David Ortiz.
Sure, Magglio Ordonez had a good season but this award is called MVP, Most Valuable Player.
So, in that case, Big Papi is the more valuable player.
David Ortiz lead his team with a .332 average, 35 home runs, 117 runs batted in, .445 OBP and a .621 SLG.
Sure, Maggs hit .363 but again, its most valuable, and David Ortiz got on base more than Ordonez did and Ortiz also had a better overall offensive year, shown by his slugging percentage.
MVP awards don't use stats from the post season, and now that you mentioned that Ordonez didn't get any stats in the post season because his team didn't make it, that is just saying that Ortiz is better.
Magglio failed to lead his team into the post season, even with all-stars Carlos Guillen, Placido Polanco, Pudge Rodriguez and Justin Verlander. David Ortiz DID lead his team to the post season with a slumping Manny Ramirez, an old Jason Varitek, a disapointing J.D. Drew and Julio Lugo and bad years from others.
When you see what talent Ortiz worked with and made the post season with, it just shows that Ortiz is a more valuable player.

Good choice, and yes the MVP award IS awarded after the regular season but before the playoffs start, so it was known that the Yanks were in and the Tigers werent. It was also known that the Sox were in it, and may I remind you that Ordonez was the RUNNER-UP, not Ortiz. Leading a team to the playoffs doesnt matter.
"Ordonez didn't get any stats in the post season because his team didn't make it, that is just saying that Ortiz is better. "
Just because Ortiz made the postseason and had postseason stats DOES NOT mean he is BETTER.
I believe also Verlander had an outstanding season, as did Guillen, and that Pudge's and Polanco's were not subpar either. However to say Manny was slumping is just plain FALSE. He hit .296, with 20 HRs and 88 RBIs. And he tore it up in the postseason, so to say he is slumping is utterly untrue. Lugo did NOT have a bad year either. He spent some of it injured, but when he played, he was the catalyst in that lineup with Dustin Pedroia. There were outstanding performances from the pitching staff as well, so to say "bad years from others" is ALSO false. Yes, Ortiz is good, but he didnt make others around him better. They were ALREADY good.

Okay, the award is based on regular season stats, it is announced during the postseason.
And if you do get your team in the the post season, that does mean you are better. A player's life long goal is to get World Series rings, not stats. Look at the MVP's before - the majority of them made the post season because if you can lead your team to the post season with little help around you, then you must be MVP worthy.
Lugo was injured. I know, that is just adding to my point. Ortiz lead his team to the post season WITHOUT Julio Lugo who was injured.
Mike Lowell and Dustin Pedroia were great. The rest of the players were just average. And Manny Ramirez - driving in 88 runs is not a good year. Just a down year for Manny and about an average year for the rest of the league.
Maggs couldn't lead his team to the post season with all of that talent surrounding him.
And if we were basing this on stats, Ortiz would win. Big Papi had a better OBP, which cancels out Magg's average. Ortiz had more home runs, a better slugging percentage, and much more. Sure, Ordonez had more runs batted in but thats about it.

BUT Ordonez was the runner-up, NOT Ortiz. And the voters DO consider stats. So the voters thought Mags was beter because he IS BETTER. Ortiz ISNOT THE LEADER of that team. Yes, he is good, yes his stats are better than Mags, but the team does not rally around him. he does not make any of them better. They are already good.
Mags MADE the players around him better. They may not have made the playoffs, but the team still competed, day in and day out, and showed they were not a fluke by following up a WS appearance with an 88 win season. ORtiz was the runner up in 2006 for a reason as well...he DOESNT make the players around him better. Was he a force to be reckoned with in Minnesota? No. On the contrary, he was unheard of UNTIL he got to Boston and started hitting out of his mind. Rather, its the OTHER Boston players that made HIM better, rather than him making THEM better.
Mags was awesome on the ChiSox,a nd he continues to shine on the Tigers, amking everyone around him BETTER. That is the VALUE in MVP.
Mags IS better than Ortiz, maybe not statistically, but stats arent everything.
Mags SHOULD have won MVP in 2007.

How can you make somebody on your team better in baseball?
Sure, I see that happening in basketball when you have a really good point guard or in football when you have a really good quarterback, but in football, what do you do, give the other guy hitting tips?
Maggs hasn't made the other players on his team better. Lets look at each player's stats before Maggs came and the year when Maggs came.
Pudge Rodriguez - Before: .334, 19, 86 After: .276, 14, 50
Carlos Guillen - Before: .318, 20, 97 After: .320, 5, 23
Brandon Inge - Before: .287, 13, 64 After: .261, 16, 72
Omar Infante - Before: .264, 16, 55 After: .222, 9, 43
Carlos Pena - Before: .241, 27, 82 After: 235, 18, 44
So, does this explain anything? It seems that since Ordonez has came to the Tigers, players have had off years.
Ortiz should be the MVP. He had better stats, better leadership, lead his team to the World Series and yada yada yada. Maggs had less strikeouts and more runs batted in and . . . and . . . I got nothing.
And FYI, voting doesn't matter. The title is "Should Have" not "Would Have".

gonets - postseason doesn't matter when it comes to awards....all the voting is done before postseason starts....so choking in October means nothing for MVP

Yea...the MVP is a regular season trophy. I wish they did something similar to the Conn Smythe in hockey, where the MVP of the entire playoffs was recognized. It would bring more meaning to carrying the load in October (and now November).
Despite his smashing the ball in April, without A-Rod, the Yankees would have started the season off 15 games under .500. He was that good in April & May.

i understand its given at the end of the regular season, but at the end of the regular season the payoff teams are known then, so it actually does have something to do with it...and I know he was awesome in April or May, but this TD is about OTHER than ARod..im not saying ARod didnt deserve it...he msot certainly did, and IM a Yanks fan and I think he did deserve it, but i have to argue according to the title of the TD
