mike hampton will be coming back sometime (hopefully) and no i dont expect 15 wins, but i feel he will give them good quality starts.....

john smoltz will be coming back as the closer, and he will put up solid numbers in the bullpen.

Jair Jurrjens should be a contender for the rookie of the year....
his numbers,
ERA 2.64
record 5-3
Ks 45
WHIP 1.17
BB only 22
and he has only given up 1 HR all year

"mike hampton will be coming back sometime (hopefully)"

LOL!!! That's like saying "John Edwards will be out next president". Basically, it ain't happening. You can never count on Hampton. Ever since leaving the Mets, he's either pretty much been total suckage or has been injured. Having John Smoltz as the closer should improve the pen (although Smoltz is older now) but that further depletes their starting rotation.

Tim Hudson- Very good pitcher, but not an ace.
Tom Glavine-5 inning pitcher now.
The rest of the rotation has been put together by tape and glue thus far. It hasn't been terrible, but it's only May. The Braves need a more proven starter (Joe Blanton?) in the worst way. With the current pitching staff, they ain't making the playoffs.

As far as the NL, this is the way I see it. The Mets will improve from now. They have too much talent to keep doing this bad. They'll get hot. The Phillies are for real too. A very explosive line-up with a surprisingly solid bullpen. I can't see Atlanta winning the division. As far as teams outside the division, they're the Cubs, Astros, D-Backs, Brewers, and Astros. I'd say those are the contenders thus far.

Out of room.

the braves have 4 batters in their starting roster who are batting over .300
chipper jones .415
brian mccann .337
yunel escobar .308
kelly johnson .300
and mark kotsay is close with .295

in my oppinion, mark kotsay has been one of the best pickups of the offseason. he is totally destroying andruw jones stats from last year and his defense isnt bad either
batting .295 4 HR 21 RBI

and chipper is arguably the most feared hitter in baseball right now....
batting .415
12 HR
35 RBI
.487 OBP
.687 SLG
and no i dont excpect him do be red hot all year, but he seems determined to stay healthy and carry his team into the playoffs

I have no problem with the Braves batting line-up. They have a very good hitting bunch. It's the rotation I'm worried about. Jorge Campillo, Jo-Jo Reyes, and Jair Jurrjens (the back 3 of the Braves rotation) have only made a combined 35 starts in their careers. The rotation is extremely inexperienced and has proved very little here. Down the stretch, the heat will be turned up on them and I don't think a staff like that can make it in.

I know Jones is doing great and they can hit, but the rotation and the bullpen are the things that scare me. I don't think they have enough depth on the pitching side of things to make the playoffs unless they make a move for a pitcher.

Campillo left the braves game in the 4th inning b/c of a blister, he gave up only 4 hits, and had no runs scored against him. this was his second start this year, and he has pitched 10 consecutive scoreless innings with no walks, 10 strikeouts and five hits allowed. i feel like he can do this all year. in Mexico he was a dominate pitcher. He led his league in ERA in 2004, with a 2.07 ERA....

He might have done rather well in Mexico, but he has basically no proven track record in the bigs here in the US. Down the stretch, I wouldn't trust these guys in bigger games. Chances are in the a division like the NL East, you'll need something else.

The Mets finally won a game yesterday and should start rolling again. Once Pedro comes back (LOL. I know, but you never know), you have a nice trio of Johan, Maine, and Pedro. That's better than Hudson, Glavine, and whoever else the Braves throw out there right now. Same thing goes with the Phillies. They'll contend the whole year and could very well win the division.

As far as the WC goes, you have the Cardinals, Astros, and Dodgers as the biggest 3 threats right now. The Cardinals have done great thus far considering they haven't had Carpenter. So when he comes back, that'll only help them. The Astros have the hitting (although the rotation is still shallow) and the Dodgers are by far the 2nd best team in the NL West (the Giants, Rockies, and Padres have been trainwrecks).

The Braves will contend, but lack of depth in pitching will kill them. Add the fact they have the worst record on the road in baseball.

not only will Atlanta make the playoffs they will win the NL East

May 23, 2008  06:52 PM ET

Hudson isn't an ACE????? REALLY!?!?! More wins, less losses and a lower ERA than your boy Santana this year, AND last year

May 23, 2008  06:58 PM ET

My boy?! I ain't a Met fan BS.

May 23, 2008  07:02 PM ET

BS, through careers, who's been better? Not even that close.

Wins and losses doesn't prove much as Johan didn't have the best supporting cast around him last year.

May 23, 2008  07:37 PM ET

Braves suck!

May 23, 2008  07:37 PM ET

Hudson is 7-3 with an ERA below 3.00. thats pretty damn good.

Also the braves have the best team ERA in the NL and the 6th best bullpen ERA. With Smoltz returning sometime as a closer that will just go down even lower. The main problem with the braves is their hitting consistency. Other than Chipper of course. Finally they got to figure out how to win on the road. Being first in the league in home wins and last in road wins is a problem that they really need to fix.

May 23, 2008  07:45 PM ET

man come on the braves might not be the best team in the league but they don't suck.

They Have talent like Chipper Jones who leads the MLB in BA

They have good pitchers like Hudson, SMoltz. and Glavine

they also have people like McCann and Kelly Johson who are pretty good

May 23, 2008  08:06 PM ET

Team that can't win on the road making the playoffs? No chance.

May 23, 2008  10:14 PM ET

i bet they can make it

May 23, 2008  10:17 PM ET

the braves will be able to make it easily, plus we have won 5 in a row
